Old V5 forms

A car related query but not related to towing or caravans. Yesterday while tidying out some old paperwork I came across two old V5 forms, one for a previous car of mine, the other for an old car belonging to my wife. Both cars are long gone, traded in about 4 years ago. I can't understand why I have both these forms, originals not photocopies, both intact, the tear off slip to notify Dvla of change of ownership is still there. That in itself is something I am usually bordering on the obsessive and paranoid about sending off myself. I have never had any problems, road tax demands etc from the DVLA about these cars so assuming everything must be ok but really puzzled as to why I have them. As they are both from around the same time frame I suspect my memory must be playing up and guessing that around 2012 there must have been an alternative method of transferring ownership when cars were traded in, perhaps electronically?
Anybody got any solutions ( apart from attending a memory clinic)
Rob

go onto the gov website and put the reg numbers in, if there currently on the road or not it should tell you.
if they are, the new keepers will have new documents just destroy them. or keep them as souvenirs,

one of my bikes had no V5 but had no trouble getting a replacement.

Thanks Colin, didn't know you could do that. I'm sure everything is fine otherwise I would have had reminders re road tax and an automatic fine every year for both cars but just can't figure out why I have still got both these forms and why I didn't hand them over when I traded the cars in. Weird.

Well remembered that, Graham, I certainly had no recollection of it!

One of the forms I have is in the old colour so that might explain that. The other looks like the updated version though. That one does have my wife's personalised reg number on it though which I assume would be changed when the car went back to the dealership.

Your wife's personalised number will only be changed if you filled in a 'reservation form'. If not it passes on to the new car owner. :(

Had two cars since that one and she still has her own reg number. When she changes her car the one she trades in has to get a new number then her own number gets transferred to whatever car she buys. The dealership always deals with this so not sure of the exact procedure but know there is a fee involved.

This only works if the reg hasnt been changed

To transfer the cherished plate from vehicle to vehicle you still need to sign the V5 and give it to the dealer so its a bit strange you still have them?

Yep, that is really what is puzzling me. I think that with what was my own car I have the old version of the V5 left, so must have handed over the new version when I traded the car in. With my wife's car? Really don't know unless she handed over the old version? As I said earlier I am not getting any problems regarding road tax for cars I don't own and the cars were got rid of 4 years ago so I am assuming all is well, just puzzled as to why I had these V5s in my possession. Thinking it must have been the change over to the new versions that has caused this.
