Hi all, can anyone recomend an overnight stop near Caen not too far off the main A13/N75, it doesnt have to be all bells and whistles just somewhere to sleep and have a good feed locally.

Kevin,

If you are travelling via the Caen Ferry (Ouistreham), then there is a good municipal camp site at the edge of the town - at the junction of the D84 and D514 - entrance off a 5 way roundabout.

An easy 15 minute walk into the bright lights of Ouistreham and about 12 km to Caen itself.

However, if you are driving past Caen from one of the other ferry ports, then maybe somewhere like the two Castel camping sites close to Lisieux would be better? We've stayed at both (different years) for a few days to enjoy Normandie before heading off further South.

Camp-site "Le Brevedent" and Chateau-Camping Le Colombier" - both are good and located between the N13 and the A13, and about 20 km before Caen.

I intend to travel Portsmouth/Caen and plan on an overnight at the municipal site outside Ouistreham on or obout the 5th of September. Does anyone know if it is open then, and, can one gain access later in the evening as the ferry is quite late (even without delays)I have always pulled up a aires in the past but you lot have put me off ( I am sure for my own good)

Thanks guys

Mike,

That's a good question. I know the people live in the gate house building, and since they get a reasonable amount of business from the ferry port - I'd assume that they would have that covered.

But we've only stayed at that municipal on the way back to the UK - obviously for the first ferry in the morning.

I like this site on the way down to Brevedent:

Camping Domaine du Lac (Blangy le Chateau)

This site is about an hours run to or from Le Havre and is in the Caravan Club Europe Guide under Pont L'Eveque. Its run by an Englishman called Mike, and is a good alternative for me to the site that I use at Pont Audemer. It has a small restaurant and bar, and there are others in the nearby village of Blangy le Chateau as well as shops.

There is free fishing as well, and I once caught a goldfish there!
