Any idea where this is ? Looks quite like Boulogne, where the first height warning sign was at the entrance to the underpass near the port and caused a lot of dangerous last minute lane-changing.

Definatetly Rouen. Me and the family were there last summer, 2.9m caravan, last minute spot by wife on tunnel height. Drastic lane change (checked mirror first too!) and avoided same outcome. Did see a caravan reversing out of one of the earlier tunnels in Rouen. Was French and we saw them at the municipal site( Le Bec Hellouin) We got there first. Yahoo!! However, year before had a slightly lower van and got very lucky in Rouen, went under tunnels, must've missed by an inch or two! Traffic behind usmust have had kittens!! Advice to all, stick to the right hand lane through Rouen!!!

Very sad. I once saw a volvo estate with bikes on a roofrack drive into the height barrier on car park in the centre of Benodet - the, English, driver had obviously forgotten about the bikes - lots of tutting from the watching French folk and a very red-faced driver.
A practical tip I once heard of being used by a breakdown operative who attended a vehicles stuck under a height barrier was to let down the tyres. The few extra inches gained enabled the motorhome driver in that case to reverse out.
To try to avoid problems In the important documents folder we carry in the car, when on holiday, the front page is a list of all the car and caravans' dimenions (HxwxL), weights and tyre pressures so they are instantly to hand if there is any concerns.

Like it Parksy.I must say, have seen this sort of thing a couple of times.On a trip to Cornwall a few years ago,a van turned up on site with the nearside top front corner smashed in.He'd taken an alternative route from the recommended club book route and collided with an overhanging tree.

We have a low bridge near our station & every now & again we have a lorry using sat nav try to get under the bridge, so its a case of letting the tyres down & dragging it out. Then waiting for the railtrack experts to come & inspect the damage to the bridge

Didn't get a picture but some years ago a very well known national club site in the Cotswolds installed new safety barriers. Due to poor adjustment, one descended between the towcar and caravan which were leaving, causing considerable damage to the 'van. I always wondered whether the van in question was insured through the same club and how the insurance claim was worded.
