We to have been affected by the curtailment of the Barfleuer sailing between Cherbourg and Poole , we have however been offered a sailing from Caen - Portsmouth ( at no extra cost , save for the extra fuel we will burn to get there ) . But due to sailing times we will have to night stop at Caen port with the legs down in the car lanes ( which we have been told by Brittany Ferries that we can do ) . Can anybody back this up , have they stopped overnight at the port ?

BF have said we can get a full refund if we canx our xing. We would then look to using LD lines out of Le Harve , but it is extra distance to travel and cost similar to that of BF.

Hope anybody else who has been affected gets sorted .

Thanks Pip

Hi Pip,

The Ferry port at Caen is actually not in Caen at all, but a few miles down the Road in Ouistreham. If you look at the thread a few below this one, entitled "Camp site Nr Quistreham (sic) for one night only" you will see some alternative options to staying on the dockside together with a post from Derek saying that they have stayed on the dockside several times with no problems.

Cheers

The municipal site in Ouistreham Les Pommiers is walking distance from the port. Its not the greatest site we have ever used but its 5 mins to the port and you will find dozens of other Brits there each night getting the following days ferry. I would take their offer as Ouistreham is a better option if you are going south than Cherbourg or Le havre and St Malo is even better if you can stand the longer crossing. St Malo and Caen are the same price with BF and we go out St Malo (night)back from Caen (day)

We used the Ouisterham (Caen) crossing last year, out of season, and were not allowed to park up at the port (Caen) until he last ferry had left at approx 23.00hrs. We used the site adjacent to the village (Les Pommiers??) for the night. a bit rough but OK but gates not open until 7.00am.

There is no need to worry about the gates at Les Pommiers not opening until 7 oclock as the ferry does not sail until 830 and its a maximum of 5 mins from the site, I always arrive too early and its not been a problem for us.

About three miles from the ferry port on the main road into it is "Les Hautes Coutures". This is a pleasant little site and caters for ferry users both arriving and departing France.

We've always used this when travelling through Ouistreham.

Hi Vic,

There might be a problem with Les Hautes Coutures as it has been reported by Jenny in another thread that they have ceased to allow one night stays.

I suspect however if you turn up at their door there probably will not be a problem. Just arm yourself with alternative options in case they do turn you away.

Cheers
