Overnight stop en route to Interlaken

Whenever I've travelled to Interlaken previously I've gone via French Autoroute staying overnight at Verdun. Now, with the current poor exchange rate between Sterling & Euro I intend to travel via Belgium and Germany to avoid toll payments. Can anyone recommend a reasonable overnight stop just off the motorway,probably somewhere in Germany.

If you just want a quiet place just off the autobahn to spend the night, you can stop off behind our back garden. We live just 5 minutes drive away from the A3/A66 junction near Wiesbaden. I can offer you a free electric hook up, too, if you like.

But we thinking of doing the same thing, but have never travelled that route before.

What are the motorways like??

In general, the motorways through Belgium and Germany are good. However, in the summer, especially at weekends, the A3 between Frankfurt and W

Out of interest how much would the toll roughly be on the french motorways travelling over to swizterland?

It was roughly 50 Euros in a car about two weeks ago going via Calais to Colmar/Mulhouse, so I would say it would be around 90, as I think a caravan adds about just under double.We are going via Belgium,Luxembourg at end of June to save a few pounds

and I've been the French route two many times now(holiday with van & work without)and I've always wanted to see where Radio Luxembourg was.Showing my age now.

If you go to www.autoroutes.fr it will work out your route for you (including taking note that you are towing) and tell you exactly what the tolls will be.

If you want to avoid charges, go through Belgium (Bruges/Ghent/Brussels/Liege) to Germany then down the A3 autobahn from Koln towards, but turn onto the A67 towards Darmstadt and continue south on the A5 to the Swiss border at Basle. The charge you cannot then avoid is the Swiss motorway pass (Vignette) which costs

Message for David Klyne - stayed 3 nights at Camping Schinderhannes - very pleasant - ideally located for return leg from Switzerland. Facilities a little old fashioned but very clean - water hot. Good restaurant on site. Will probably revisit. Thanks for your suggestion.

Hi,

Last month I did exactly as you are about to do.Look at the thread 'Imminent trip to Switzerland'.It's only a couple of pages back.

It was about 6 1/2 hrs driving from Dunkirk to the site in Germany ,via Belgium and Luxemburg.
