Hi, It would be great if you could let me know how you pack your bikes safetly in your caravans, I've had many suggestions like using bubble wrap etc, but how do you secure them in so they don't move around. We have two boys and there bikes are coming with us for the first time at Easter, so I would be grateful for your experince.

Padded cycle bags are the best answer for our two bikes.

Two rear of car cycle racks were quite expensive 'quality' items. A strap failed on one, and expensive damage was done to the car tail gate. On a tow hitch bracket movement caused a stress fracture and the bikes again damaged the car.

Car mounting also has security draw backs.

Internet shops and Ebay have in expensive padded cycle bags, some carry the wheels, some with seperate padded wheels bags.

In a proper cycle bag no damage will be caused to car or caravan interiors.

Hi there

I have transported two adult bikes in the van in the past. It isnt ideal but providing you take care lifting them in and out it isnt much of a problem.

We just covered ours with old sheets propped them up with upholstery and used a couple of bunge straps to stop them moving

You dont need to go to much more trouble than that or you will end up leaving them at home to avoid the hastle

When we go away we often take five bikes, three go on the roof bars and the other two go in the van.

As Clockwork says padded bags are the best answer, I have two dhb Marden cycle bags which came with separate bags for the wheels. They sit side by side in the front of the van between the seats and the wheel bags are placed on the seats,

best regards, Martin

If you are putting the bikes in he van - remember the weight!!!!

Van payloads are not as much as you think, especially if you also have a spare wheel and mover on the van.

Hi Lindsay,

We always have 2 adult bikes and 2 kids bikes in the van. We have the 2 larger bikes towards the front, leaning to the side onto the cushions. I also put something between the tyres and the wood at the bottom of the bed boxes, to stop it marking.

The kids bikes rest in similar fashion against the middle dinette. We have 2 of the long plastic carpet protectors that we put down whilst travelling, it also helps when it's wet or muddy.

We have tried a rear mounted cycle carrier but it just wasn't practical for us or easy to use. Could've tried a different one I suppose, but another

I've put bikes in our van once.

As above its OK but be careful getting them in & out.

Somebody invented a rack that fits accross the bed boxes and holds the front of the bikes, you remove the front wheels i think. But to be honest I'd say thats overkill.

Just check MTPLM & noseweight and you'll be fine.

We carry our bikes just about the same as david.

We have the from chest with cushions down both sides layout.

First we put old towels along the cushion tops/sides were the bikes will rest, on top and onto the carpet on each side cusion we put some old white sheets, dirty side up, marked with felt tip pen.

One bike is rested on each cushion at approx 45 degrees, such that the bike tryes abutt each other, i then use some short elastic wraps to hold the wheels together.

It all sounds complicated, but only takes 10 minutes to complete, start to finish. And have never had them move.
