We are soon to use the Portsmouth to Bilbao crossing. Can anyone tell me what the on board facilities are like to occupy youngsters for 35 hours and what are the cabins like.

Has anyone tried to keep a caravan fridge cold during the crossing? I have thought about connecting a leisure battery but found that it would only run the fridge for a few hours.

Any ideas please.....

We were just talking caravans and this crossing.

Outbound my daughter froze every thing that was possible. ie milk and cheese. The fridge was cooled and packed just before leaving for Portsmouth, they have a 43 watt solar panel on the caravan roof and son inlaw has the panel rigged to run the fridge / battery. Fridge was still verycold when they got to Bilbao and the battery still had a charge. He assumed that there was some light on the car decks that may have helped keep the power going.

Hi,

We have just booked for this year leaving end September but just want to go one way as we are wintering in Portugal and Spain and will back come up through France next year. We have booked with the new ferry line AT Ferries and the cost one way was 306 pounds for outside cabin, the caravan & camping club wanted 406 pounds for same ferry and it was easy to book by phone or you can go on line and book, I needed to phone as we tow a car on a trailer and it was easier to book by phone.

Sorry Gil

Dont know the exact costings because we are going on a rally with The C C.

But Ferry, 12 nights on site for 7 people cost only about &1200. Hows that for a bargain?

I don't really understand why you should be concerned about your fridge as they do sell food/drink in Spain.
Unfortunately some of us are on medication which needs to be stored in a refrigerator otherwise the drug cannot be injected.

I have asked onboard the ferry for them to store it in their refrigerator, but they are not keen to do so incase of theft etc...

Please engage brain before opening mouth...

We are in the insulin camp as well, for anyone in the same position - http://www.friouk.biz/uk/ Works well for us and we always have it as back up for running out of gas or power cuts as it's the difference between life and death.

We also like to take a few home comeforts when we leave home. My kids and grandchildren like to get a good few miles down the route when they land and often have a road side cook up rather than head to a hypermarket or whatever.

Guess it's down to personal choice Evans.

I'm sure that if you explain to the Ferry company that you are carrying medically prescribed drugs they will be able to organise an Electric hook up for you.

This has to be done for the refrigerated lorries - so why not you ?
