Position of caravan lighting

I am considering moving the front lights on my Bailey caravan lower down to the same position that they were on my Ace Award

The supplier of the lights says that you can have reflectors lower down but not lights

I believe that 350mm is the min height for front marker lights and side marker lights but can only find chapter and verse for France !!

Anybody know where I can find a diagram showing the positioning with dimensions

Thanks Sprocket

I have seen that(Reg 1989) and it appears to so no requirement under vertical height as I read it

I managed to find on a French site a picture/diagram which said 350mm and I can't see it being OK in France and OK for Ace to fit them low down in UK if its not legal

I have asked what height they consider legal and await a reply

Just had a quick read if the 1989reg Schedules 2 ( front position lamps ) minimum height above ground = ( no requirement ) ??????

By the look of this, as long as they are 150mm in from the side & no minimum height, there is a max height....

Deli Dave

When we had the Oklahoma we were returning at 2 am on a dark rainy morning heading for the tunnel in France

Our friends were following us and I was complaining bitterly about his headlights in my mirrors dazzling me

It was only when at a diversion I saw him on the opposite side of the dual carriageway that I realised that it was my own caravan running lights that were the problem

Already I have seen a post fron a Pegasus owner who had the same problem but probably worse with his illuminated grab handles

When I first saw the Pegasus in the showroom I wondered if it was from the never tow in the dark school of design

At least its easy to swap the lower reflectors for lights

Jokon do a really neat same size as the original LED marker light that only needs a small hole for the cableand is flat on the back

I have fitted the amber ones on the side and they are really neat and very firm with trim tape and silicone fixing

I was really pleased when the ACE Award Nightstar lived up to its name with the running lights low down

Sproket I put reflectors in your high position on the Nightstar and would like the lights there but it seems neater to just replace the lower reflectors

I thought of having both sets of lights for poor visibility daytime running with the option of switching off the upper ones when needed

Before you go dropping lights down please remember thatiti s illegal to have ANY wiring other than gas monitoring applications inside a gas locker.

The only time wiring can pass through a gas locker is in a gas tight conduit and at a MINIMUM of 500mm above the gas cylinder base.

Thanks for that Damian I will bear it in mind

In the Award Nightstar the floor of the gas locker just had a couple of bits of plywood at the corners that covered the wiring

There is wiring in the Senator gas locker to the locker light

The wiring to these flush fitting lights is long enough to make the join under the gas locker floor out of the wayI don't think that there is any danger of the wiring being damaged but I have some plastic conduit and appreciate your input

It would be easy to box in the corners now that I am aware of this point

Hi Damian

I thought that you might be interested to know that in the Bailey front locker the wires from the side lights comes down the inside of the gas locker at the side and the 2 wires from the side light are encased in a black plastic sleeve but in no way are they sealed with any glands etc

Food for thought!

Hi Guys, I hear what you are saying about current vans having wiring and in some cases lights inside th egas locker, but that is how the van was built and certified.

However, we now come to the current regulations as discussed at length in the PIR topic, and current legislation prohibits such wiring, and if doing work on the van now, you must adhere to the current regs.

Crazy does not describe it, but there you go.

I can see the point though. There must be no chance of a spark being produce dinside the gas locker, which could happen with a light when switching on and off, or a bulb blowing and the glass breaking whilst the filament is still red hot.

I've never understood why a pair of 5w bulbs visible in rear view mirrors causes such "distress" - what do you do when another vehicle with 55w headlamp bulbs appears behind you - stop immediately ??
