Problem with 12v System

Hi,

Whilst away in the caravan last week the 12v system stopped working and I am looking for some advice on getting it sorted.

Over a period of a couple of days everything that is 12v slowly stopped working (lights, water pump, extractor fan etc). I have checked the status of the battery and it is still fully charged which seems to suggest that it is not the charger at fault? I am thinking it may be an earth fault but am not really sure where to start with identifying the problem.

Any help that anyone could give with either supplying a potential solution for the problem or any other ideas on identifying the fault if it looks as though I am wrong would be gratefully received.

I will potentially get an electrician to look at it but would like to have an idea of what the problem is before parting with cash if it is just a "loose wire".

I have a 2003 Compass Omega 524

Many thanks in anticipation

Andrew,

You say the systems slowly died - which implies a failing battery. So how did you check that the battery was OK?

But you also need to check for a poor or corroded connection, broken supply or return wire (no earth on 12 volt systems), a defective fuse or faulty switch.

Do you have a reasonable quality multi-meter, about 5 metres of test probe extension cable, and are you happy to use it to diagnose a fault?

You need to start at the battery and check everything, item by item until you find the problem.

I do hope it was'nt just the fuse blown on your old charger....

Some types have a blade fuse buried in their workings, which it is not obvious to check, unless you know it is there.
