Problems with gas

We have just picked up our new to us caravan. It's a 2005 Lunar Freelander which is dealer special based on the Lexon. We have connected everything up but ae unable to get any gas into the appliances in the caravan. We have new 7kg Butane, a bulkhead regulator and the clip on connector. We've put the connector on, moved the tap from horizontal to vertical, turned the tap on the regulator from horizontal to vertical and turned the taps on in the caravan, but still no gas to the appliances.

Is there something we are missing.

The previous owner hasn't used the van this year, so maybe it's something to do with that.

We are booking it in for a service, but just wanted to try the fridge etc out.

Thanks

Glen, there are a few things to consider.

Firstly regarding the regulator.

The yellow tap just below the regulator should be left in the open position at all times, it is NOT an isolating valve as such, it is there only for testing purposes by service people.

With Butane and the colder weather, it will not gas as easily as Propane, but , as long as the temperature is reasonable, as it is today here, it should work.

With having no gas through the system for 12 months or so, it will take a while to purge the system of air, best to start at the cooker hob and open a burner tap until you smell gas coming from it.

With the fridge, as it uses a very small amount of gas through a very small jet, it will take quite some time to purge the air.

Lastly, it may well be the regulator which is causing the problem by being blocked.

Where is the regulator in relation to the gas cylinder top? if it is level , or lower, with the pigtail connected directly into the top without a 90 degree elbow on the regulator then this may be the cause.

The bulkhead regulator should be mounted as high as possible in the gas locker, with a 90 degree bend on the inlet to ensure the pigtail runs downhill to the bottle to allow any plasticiser to run back to the bottle and not into the regulator. This is a job for an approved LPG qualified gas fitter to do as these regulators fall under the gas regulations.

All caravans will have a set of gas shut-off valves, one control for each appliance, internal to van, probably in a low cupboard, or under the cooker etc.

Are you sure all these gas supply valves are in the ON position? ie lever/knob in line with outlet pipe??

Some regulators, mine included, have a small reset button that must be pressed before any gas is avalable.

I met a couple with a motor home in a French hypermarket car park, surounded by gas bottles and regulators which they had just purchased, but to no avail, still no gas.

The look on their faces when I pressed the little reset button was indescribable!
