I am about to change over from Butane to Propane for winter use. Apart from changing the regulator to suit, do I need to do anything else to the van gas system?

No that is it, if you have a bulkhead fitting you just change the tail. We have run on propane only for the last 4 years - very little difference if you can run the bigger bottles.

To clarify - very little difference in cost.

We run a 13kg in the locker and sometimes a 19kg sat in front.

The smaller bottle works out at the same price for heat value and the bigger bottle is cheaper than butane.

Thanks for your prompt and helpful reply.

If you have the old clip on 28 mb butane regulator then you will need to get a new 37 mb propane one. You do not need to change the hose in this case. If,as mentioned you have the new 30 mb regulator then it works with both butane and propane, bt you will have to change the high pressure hose and cylinder gas tap. If you plan a lot of winter caravanning then change to propane and stick with it. The new Calorlite cylnders may be beneficial for you.

To many people are jumping to conclusions, and their answers may well be confusing David.

as you may be aware there are a number of different possible systems you may have, and until we know which one you do have you wont know which answer to follow.

Before a a definitive answer can be given, we need a little more information please David.

What make and year is your caravan?

What regulator do you currently have?

To resurrect the thread and hijack all in one swift movement... I have a '98 Coachman Mirage. There's is no modern bulk head regulator. My existing gas system is a 7kg butane cylinder, with blue clip on regulator (28mbar) then low pressure hose to the van connection.
I want to use the van all year, so I have bought (though not yet connected) a 6kg propane cylinder and appropriate propane regulator (37mbar). I have also bought new low pressure hose as recommended.

Can anyone advise on what low pressure side problems I'm likeley (or not) to encounter with 9mbar more pressure in the caravan pipes and at the burners?

Cheers, MM

For a long time before the change to bulkhead regulators, all the LPG appliances in caravans were suitable for multiple pressures, specifically 28mbar butane, 30mbar dual and 37mbar propane.
I use a cylinder mounted 37mbar regulator on the propane cylinders in my 2001 Bailey - it's actually a marginal advantage over later models as the higher propane pressure heats up quicker.

As long as your gas system is in good condition, you will have no problems changing from Butane to Propane, or the other way round.
You will just need the correct regulator for the cylinder.

If it were a bulkhead mounted regulator, you would just need the correct pigtails for the gas being used.
