Happy camping

Maddy
Hi - I agree, if I had to look at a check list that long, I wouldn't go, it just wouldn't be worth the effort, I'd go on a cheap package holiday.

Hi Tobago

....but I'm assuming most people take all that stuff anyway, for a long trip to Europe - it's just a list so you don't forget anything!

Sorry the format didn't come out very well - copied from a spreadsheet!

When we were at work we seemed to get everything ready at a pace when we had time and rarely forgot anything. Now we are retired we start the prep much earlier and by the time we are ready to leave we tend to forget what we have already done and are more inclined to forget something!

Hello Keith J,

Well I have printed a copy and will certainly use it as the basis of our packing. Being a newcomer, I am sure this comprehensive list will be invaluable.

Thanks and best regards,

George

We have a checklist too - and it's invaluable.

We also have a 'caravan box' at home, where anything which needs to go back in the caravan goes until our next visit to the storage site. At the moment this includes the curtains which have been washed, the cotton doormat which has also been washed, and some waste bin liners (because we no longer collect plastic carrier bags and have had to buy some)! As we get nearer to our holiday dates this also starts to contain things 'ticked off' the list.

Having forgotten our passports last year (they were taken out of their normal wallets in Cairo and although the wallets went with us when we set off to France, the passports didn't)I am now just about to add passports to our list!

Good list and I would also add;

Food for initial meals, dry goods to avoid looking for them abroard and one or two emergency meals if we dont get to shop.

An awning with everything that involves such as floor covering and loads of steel pegs for baked earth(we hope)

As we prefer to cook outside wherever possible; Cooking table (for the awning), Remoska, Electric BBQ grill,Hotplate and

Gorge Forman. Thats it for the additional cooking equipment until we see the next gadget.

Books, lots of them to last 11 weeks (spend the winter in charity shops collecting these)

Overnight bags for the ferry.

Maybe I've overlooked them, but I'd add:

Duct tape

Leatherman or equivalent

Swiss army knife or something similar

12v vacuum cleaner

Remote controls for TV, Satellite receiver, and DVD player

DVD's (not much point in taking the DVD player if you've forgotten to pack DVD's)

Rubber mallet for awning pegs

Thanks everyone for your comments - including Maddy and Tobago!

David Klyne - I agree it seemed easier when we were at work - but then we only had two-week holidays, there seems much more to remember now (nothing to do with age!)

Bedford George - Thankyou. Hope it is useful - I am sure you will need to add more as I take some things for granted.

Val A. - Good idea about the box. We usually try to keep things in a pile in the garage, then bring the 'van up to the house a couple of days before the off, for loading and final checks. I find the easiest things to forget are one or more of the multitude of chargers required.

Mikey - I get all those things + the spare wheel in the front!

Aquaroll fits in one of the gas cylinder holders, wastemaster fits infront of the spare wheel, one Campingaz cylinder fits in the second gas holder with the second cylinder secured next to it - everything else is quite small and fits into spare spaces. Fiamma ramps are useful for wedging it all in.

And the nose weight is just under 100kg.

Another David - We probably will end up taking some basic food items so we don't starve the first night on site. And we do stock up with an emergency meal or two, once on the road. Don't have a full awning - just Mega Porch and extension. Forgot to include the cooking table - will add! Overnight bags - yes need to add too!

Lutz - Have Duct tape - it is with string, screws, wire etc. but will add to list (hope Maddy is not still following!!). Missed off vacuum cleaner - thanks - we have a small mains one.

Have Stanley knife with string etc. Will add remotes & DVDs - have some copies of TV programmes for when satellite is out of range!

Derek Brad - Have guitar (need some practice though!)

Keith
