We have decided to use our caravan sometime in April, could I please have some recommendation for sites for newbies. We have decided Cambridge as it's approx 50 miles from our home but any other sites in other places would be appreciated. We live just outside Northampton. Many thanks

I'm sorry that I don't know the sites around Cambridge but I'd suggest that as newbies you might want to pick a site for perhaps a weekend away not too far from home.
You are almost certain to forget something although a list might help and you might prefer to be fairly local and not too far from a caravan dealer / workshop / accessory shop for your first outing.
There are some lovely places around Northampton, are you a member of either the Camping & Caravanning Club or the Caravan Club?
Both clubs have, in addition to their main sites, quieter certified sites or certified locations, nominally restricted to 5 units which means that they are usually peaceful countryside retreats.
One C&CC certified site not far from your area that I can thoroughly recommend is Woodlands Park certified site, a small well run site with ehu (electric hook up), run by Mrs Sue Calver. the site has a small but spotlessly clean toilet and shower portacabin type block and a reasonably quiet location.
Woodlands Park is very easy to get to, situated in the village of Clapham, just three miles north of the city of Bedford.
Clapham has welcoming pubs, takeaways, a few shops and a bus service from near to the campsite entrance into Bedford if you want a rest from driving.
The nearby Glenn Miller museum is open in April and there are other places of interest not far away.
Woodlands Park is open to C&CC members only and if you are not already a member you can join when you get on site.
We stay there for a few days every August, the site fee varies from £15-£19 per night depending on the season.

Nine years ago we were unable to book into CC Cherry Hinton. It was full!
Our second choice at Highfield Touring Park proved an absolute success. Away from all the noise bar the combine harvester in the adjacent fields. Actually a fantastic experience watching acres of wheat cut. The dog walk is brilliant taking you up a slope above the site ( yes they do have the odd hill in Cambridge)and safe for the dogs.
We were in the very top field , good pitches EHU and views.
The site was well kept, clean and even had a visiting chippy twice a week. This was in 2005.
A walk down the road brings you to a bus stop where the bus will take you into the City centre.
Good luck.

Hi David, I too would recommend Ferry Meadows, the site is situated both sides of Ham Lane which leads onto a very large man made park, The River Nene runs along side and feeds several lakes contained within the park, their are endless cycle and footpaths.
Ferry meadows has two sites , the one we tend to use is mainly Hard standing, the other side of the road the pitches are mainly grass with a few hard standing Pitches, People with children tend to use .grass pitch site as it has a very large Children's play area.
We have met lots of people from your area Northants whist staying their.
There is also a local railway station , mins walk away that runs steam trains into Peterborough .
Please remember not to arrive on site before 12 midday, You will be turned away, there are parking places of the main road prior to turning into Hams Lane.
