Red Wine??

Can any one give advice on red wine, as you are proberbly aware it's suppose to be better for you than say a pint of beer, which I currently sup.
Can you advise on which is your favorite, country of origin, region, dry, sweet med rough or whatever it is they come in.
or preferbly the name on the bottle!!!
As you have proberbly noticed I dont have a clue and have got to start some where.
I have tasted a few over the years and I might well have been drinking vinegar.

I know it's down to personal taste but I dont mind trying a few to get the one I like

We all have to start somewhere!

So a few simple pointers, The law of diminishing returns usually applies to wines, Doubling the price doesn't usually mean the wine is twice as good, but generally the really really cheap wines (i.e. sub £3.00) are poor, but often good for cooking.

For drinking, I find Aldi and Lidl have some surprisingly good wines (award winning) for £5.99 a bottle. One of our current red favourites is Aldi's Baron Amarillo Rioja Reserva 2006 (Orange label with a gold net around the bottle). A wine buff I know was very impressed with this wine.

There are several companies that offer wine selections, Laithwaites being one. Look them up on the WWW. Their wines tend work out at about £12 a bottle.

But the important thing is you need to try a few different wines, and make your own mind up.

I'm a beer drinker like yourself Kev but for some reason lots of my relatives give bottles of wine to me at Christmas and I'm becoming partial to the occasional spot of red supermarket plonk now and again as a change from the ale.
I enjoy a Cabernet or Merlot (both are apparently types of grape) as long as the wine doesn't taste too much of spices, and when I buy it I usually look for wine produced in Chile or of course France.

The thought has just occured to me that when you are Gagakev² King of the Woosies you could appoint an official Woosie Wine Taster to advise you on such matters.

It must be South African, Chilean or Antipodean, Shiraz or chablis or at a push Italian Valpollicella. Definitely no French or German, horrible and over rated IMO.

i don't like red wine but OH likes Rioja and Merlot, TBH I don't think there is a red wine that he doesn't like. or won't drink. We will bring a selection to the Woosie club Rally.

Gagakev, think you are going to have some good times finding out which of the reds you like,as it all
subjective. do enjoy yourself. strangly drank a few reds in my time but am going through a sampling of some whites at the moment.

It all depends on what you like.... It is all about your tastebuds.... you need to know if you like dry - medium - sweet.
I'm not talking about shop bought stuff.
We started the wine trail 16 + years ago. I found I hated the stuff all red tastes revolting to me don't like any at all.
But I do prefer champagne white or rose, and must be Demi sec.... the only still wine I drink and have stored away is Vouvray single grapw and I only buy from one person in France in that I will drink demi sec and muelleux (not sure on spelling...
hubby drinks a variety of reds would drink further a field but most is from france, st nicholas de borgueil, chinon both young and old vines bordeuax,rhone, st emillion etc etc the list goes on and on.

although I don't drink reds I have become a wine sniffer LOL. in shops they tend to be blends but they can still be good.

but it is all down to your pallette,,, good tasting
