Registering Caravan in Spain

Bit of a long shot, but I'll try anyway.

Here in France, caravans are registered like a car and have their own unique number plates. A friend has his Bailey registered here and is thinking of moving to Spain to live. Does anyone know if the same procedure of separate registration applies in Spain or does the caravan have the same number plate as the towing car?

Only if the trailer is under 750kg will it carry the same number plate as the towing car. Above that it needs to be registered in its own right, just like in France.

Thanks very much for your reply Lutz. Next question. In France it's easy to register a recent UK caravan using the CNIT certificate which the manufacturer supplies. Can this be used in Spain or is there something similar.?

If the CNIT certificate is what we call the EU type approval Certificate of Compliance then yes, it can be used in Spain because that certificate is valid throughout the EU.

Thanks again Lutz. The C of C issued by Bailey is not accepted in France - don't know why. They insist on a CNIT certificate which is issued by Bailey and other manufacturers and makes registration as easy as falling off a croisant! However if the normal CofC is acceptable in Spain then that's fine.

The C of C that Bailey normally issue is not worth the paper it's printed on. That is a C of C in line with NCC requirements and only confirms that the caravan fulfils certain industry standards but it's not a legally EU-wide accepted type approval certificate which has a prescribed standard format, making it internationally valid for vehicle registration in any EU country. For example, item 0.10 always gives details of the vehicle chassis number, the date of approval and the type approval number and item 16.1 is always the MTPLM.

It doesn't matter if it's in French because all the items in the certificate follow the same format, regardless of which language the certificate is written in.

New to touring. If I were to take a van to Spain and store it there to be used on the next visit does it require a Spanish certificate? Or can it remain UK registered? Thanks

Hi Juanjo, if your car is UK registered then the 'van doesn't need to be registered in Spain. On another point, would it be in secure storage?

Caravans aren't registered in the UK, so I don't quite know what you mean.

If the caravan is always going to be towed by a UK registered car everything can stay as is so long as third party insurance on the car also covers the caravan, as will be the case. Only if it is going to be towed by a Spanish registered car will the caravan also have to be registered in Spain because it would then not be covered by any insurance, which would be illegal.
