Bonjour Pierre,

Sorry my French is not good enough for this bit! The Gross Train Weight is 3050 Kg which means that with 4 people in the car, the maximum total caravan weight we can safely tow is around 1050Kg. We have ordered a caravan which will be delivered next March (Bailey Ranger 470/4, weight 967Kg unladen).

The 1.9 engine is very good. We have not towed yet but I have seen reports saying it is very good for towing (as long as you keep within the weight restriction) and it did well in the UK Caravan Club Tow Car of the Year competition a few years ago.

And, for a family, it is a fantastic car - with lots of storage spaces, and very comfortable on long journeys.

Nous visitons France tous les etes, a Royan. Vous avez un pays beaux - et la cuisine fantastique!

Bonne chance,

Andy.

Hi Pierre

For a frenchman your english grammer is very unusual, the use of the word "poss" for possible is not typical of a non english speaker.

Do I spot a Englishman attempting to wear a beret!

Are you an expert or an antagonist?

It would take someone with an excellent knowledge of colloquial French to be able to say whether or not a French person might say "poss" instead of "possiblement". And remember that in the UK we have a wide range of regional slang and colloquial words.

hi pierre, i,d personally go for the alhambra, you get more for your money, and the 1.9 diesel is superb because of it being pumpe duses(pd),and i know for a fact the renaults suffer with EDC faults(boost sensors ,air flow meters)and weak gearboxs, some were also bad on fuel.

Seth - no problem at all with faults apart from an airbag sensor fault which was repaired. As for being bad on fuel economy - quite the opposite - we towed a heavily laden trailer 200 miles to Dover and then on to South West France last summer and averaged over 40mpg. We looked at the VW Touran but found it smaller inside and not as comfortable as the Scenic, The Scenic is quite wide - it will only fit through our garage door with the wing mirors folded in. It is definitely the most comfortable car i have owned - previous car was a Vauxhall vectra 2.0 CDX - the Scenic is far better. The gearbox is very smooth - you can change gear with one finger - yes, really.

Also - if you visit France regularly, buying Renault is great, as there is a Renault garage almost everywhere if you have any prblems - Pierre will know this!

Seth - no doubt you'll be aware that the Seat's also eats MAF, EGR's and that the installation in the Alhambra means that the Turbo pipes work lose and kink after a few years.

What also should be said is that the PD engine drinks oil at an average of up to 2 litres of oil per 10,000 miles a figure which VW says is OK???

The Renault DCI engine issues only affected two years worth of production and much was caused by the a particulate filter being fitted ahead of any "euro" demand. The result is that the low pressure in the exhaust caused a back pressure issue. A fix has now been accepted.

As for my new Car Renault Laguna Sport Tourer (DCI engine fitted) as for my wife's car Seat Altea TDi - therefore I feel well qualified to speak about both and by the way my wife's last car was a VW Sharan TDi (aka Seat Alhambra and it suffered from the above) It was still a very good car and the car that nothing goes wrong with hasn't been invented or is made by the Japanese

hi monkey sounds like youve done your homework,to be honest i dont think theres much between any of them nowerdays.as you say all the probs have been ironed out now.ive seen a few dci100 traffics with edc probs.mafs due i think to neglected air filters.i just think the idea of injectors opened by the camshaft makes for a more torquey engine.point well taken

Pierre

just be careful with the weights for a Renault Scenic - the weights quoted by Renault only account for the driver, not passengers or luggage.

you may also suffer low noseweight. as a guide only, check the following website to compare your car and desired caravan:

Renaults have a stupid way of quoting tow weights and you are right the brochure is very misleading. I have to order my Scenic and then get a letter from Renault confirming what the actual "Gross train weight" should be which falls into the normal category of any car that size.
