Hi,
I am currently in the market for replacing the tyres on my Swift Charisma 570 following a tyre shred last week after leaving the motorway. Thankfully no damage to van or alloy wheel.
The current tyres are Matador Master 175/75R/14C 98/99R MPS310 and any advice on your thoughts on suitable replacements would be appreciated.
Thanks.

A number of correspondents have reported problems with Matador tyres. Please use the search facility to read upon them.

Several of the same people have replaced their tyres with different makes offered by mobile fitters or from purchases on the internet.

By the same token though, there must be several thousand caravanners who have not had any problem with the Matador brand.

My advice would be to consult your caravan dealerincase your tyres are from a batch with a history of problems. IF they are your dealermay feel obliged to replace them.

If you go for a different make then you must make sure the new tyres have at least the same load rating or better.

On discussion on the Swift forum I remember, Swift recomended the more standard 175/80 tyre which is readily available and generally cheaper. It also have a slightly higher load index which is useful but may well require a slight change to tyre pressure

I replaced my 175/80 x 13 6ply tyres with GT Maxmiler 8 ply tyres with a load rating of 97. I ordered them from Camskill, had them in two days and at the time it was £2 delivery on each tyre, total cost was only £82. I fitted two new valves and balanced the wheels as I have my own equipment, but a tyre depot would not charge a great lot to fit them.

I had Matadors on for one season only and as one was showing signs of inner wall damage /breakdown after a lot of enquires + advice I finally decided to go the best route to avoid as much as possible the risk of a blowout. Our van is an Abbey Aventura 318. I had a pair of 195 14 AVON S/VAN AV4 8PR TL fitted, with old tyre disposal, wheel balancing, and new valves +vat the cost came to 158.51,some I know will perhaps say too much to pay but I decided to go that bit further. I also fitted a set of alko shocks to allow a slightly higher tyre pressure than what Alco/Swift recommend.I can now say about a couple of thousand miles later the van up to press is a dream to tow and it seems the mover likes these tyres also.
