Replacing a Whale Smartflo pump horizontal model with the vertical model

Hi

As I posted previously the inboard Whale smartflo pump in our Bailey Senator (5 Series/2006) was playing up a few weeks ago but then recovered. In case of future failure at this weekend's Discovery Half Price Sale I took the opportunity to buy a new one.

However the new version (UV0814) is mounted vertically rather than horizontally and it, also, comes with a large transparent filter holder which makes its inlet at 90 degrees to the pump body. The original (UP0814) pump had the inlet/outlet connectors in a straight line on either side of the pump. It means that if I fit the new pump I will have to alter the push fit pipe work and possibly the plinth on which the piping and pump is mounted. The pump and connecting fittings is quite a tight fit between the 2 lever valves which direct the flow of water from the Aquaroll to the inboard tank or the taps.

I just wondered if anyone had done this and how easy it is.

The pipework is semi-rigid 12mm with push fittings.

While doing some investigating of 'pump' noise one of the main problems was it's connection to the van wall, there are several reasons for this.
First, the pushfit fittings are designed not to leak water out, they are not though particularly good at stopping air being sucked in!
Second and in terms of resistence to flow, each tight 90deg elbow used adds 2ft to the overall length of the connection.
Third, if the semi rigid pipe touches anything solid it's vibration will cause noise.
To remove all problems, I simply swapped the semi rigid pipe for a length of Whales soft flexible hose as used to drop into the aquaroll, a pair of their 12mm hose to 12mm pushfit adaptors then providing the means to connect the hose to pump and wall.

While this was done to remove noise, it sounds like this solution will also provide a simple means for you to connect your pump, which ever way the new inlet ends up facing

For a different reason, I connected my Whale pump with a length of their soft hose that drops into the Aquaroll, The connections themselves are Whales 12mm hose to 12mm pushfit adaptors.
Being very flexible, this should allow your new pump to connect whichever way the inlet faces, most likely cut down on noise as well?!
