Have just had my van serviced and was told that I had some high damp readings. Basically I need to re-seal the awning rails both sides plus the rail above the front windows. Also the front window rubber seals need to be replaced. I was quoted a ludicrous figure for doing this so intend to do it myself

I now have the decision to make as to what to seal them with - mastic tape or cartridge mastic. Have read a number of forums about this which say both of them are better than the other and still cant make a decision. Would appreciate any guidance from people with experience of doing this job

Mastic tape for awning rails and Sikaflex for everywhere else in my experience. Just take your time removing the old rails so you do not bend or snap them. Other than that it is a very rewarding job to do.

Thanks for that hedgehog - that was the way I was swaying though I thought that the sikaflex is rather unforgiving in that you gotta get it on spot on at first touch or it is rather difficult to re-position.

Do you know where I can get large rolls of the mastic tape? can get the short rolls of W4 but thats gonna work out rather costly seen other forum posts of people getting larger rolls more economically but they never mention where from!

We have just resealed all our trims. Easier job than you think. The long awning rail is a bit arm aching taking it off so we took the back horizontal trim off and just resealed but sealed around the awning rail. We used Siroflex sealant for all. We've had a lot of rain recently and no leaks.

Further to my original post, I have now got the rail off the van. I expected to have a mastic seal all over the back of the rail but there was only mastic in the middle section and two black PVC? seal strips on the upper and lower edges. Has anyone come across this type of seal? Should I replace the black seals or just the mastic in between? If I need to replace them where should I get them from?

As anyone that has done this job before knows I only want to do this job once!! Any help or guidance would be much appreciated

Peter
