Looking around at a few different caravans we noticed that not all caravans have road lights the hitch end of the van.

I always thought that this would have been a legal thing to have...obviously not?

Dear Christine

We have been caravanning for many years and have never come across a caravan that does not have white road lights on the hitch end of the caravan - as far as i am aware these are legal requirement.

The law states that front position lamps are required if the caravan extends more than 400mm beyond the outermost part of the illuminated area of the front position lamp of the towcar.

As the caravan manufacturer has no control over the position of lamps on the towing vehicle(s) in effect it means all caravans have the necessary front lamps fitted.

Christine,

We have to fit front (white) road lights onto the front panel of the caravan upto 1.5m off the ground. In addition dependent on the width of the caravan we have to fit end outline marker lights these have to be either mounted at the front and rear as white and red lights respectively or as a single red/white light mounted on the side at high level generally in the rear corner,

Hope this helps,

Andy

Swift fit them in different places on different vans

On the Swift the lights are by the front window and on the Ace they are at the bottom of the front panel and may have been mistaken for reflectors

I was cursing my friend one dark rainy morning in France when heading for the ferry as I thouhjt his headlights were dazzling me from behind

It was only when we saw him coming from the opposite direction after a detour that we realised that it was the front marker lights on the Senator

I am so pleased that they are low down on the present Ace
