Vehicle excise duty (VED) refunds

The Government today announced that VED refunds will be restricted to the registered keeper of a vehicle and applicable only when a vehicle: has been stolen, destroyed, sold or otherwise disposed of; become eligible for a nil license; declared as statutorily off-the-road; or permanently exported. This will help ensure that motorists cannot avoid paying a pre announced rate of VED

This was quietly slipped through, you cant cash in and retax if your tax runs out while your away

Mod please note.

This is a stupid situation. If you are travelling abroad say in the south of Spain and they will not let you retax your car before you go because its to early and your tax expires whilst you are away then you cease to be legal. Some go away for up to 6 months. I think a few letters to MPs and perhaps our Magazine should take it up, along with the CC and CACC.JTS.

they typically take the line that everyone is doing it for evasive reasons best of luck with letters but doubt you will make much progress as they will no doubt have cameras ready to fine you on return. The revenue from things like this is much appreciated by H.M. Government.

Greetings,

Surely? when you apply for your refund you can put in a SORN at that point, after all you are returning their VEL and you should be putting the SORN in.

If you subsequently apply for a new vel AFTER you have put your SORN in then no one can accuse you of anything. You are playing the game by their rules.

If, as a result you are not paying their stupid increase in tax thats their problem. After all, in life things change and so do circumstances. (Including change of ownership to ones spouse etc!!!) There's mor than one way of skinning a cat.

I don't know how the UK tax authorities view the necessity to have the vehicle taxed while abroad, but the foreign authorities do not require you to have the vehicle taxed while you are temporarily in their country. It is possible to insure a car in a foreign country without it being taxed.

Here in Germany, for those planning extended touring abroad, it is possible to obtain export number plates which are exempt from tax. If you are a resident of Germany you must then take the car out of the country within 3 days and from then on you pay no tax (non-residents may use the car for a year before having to do the same). This is basically the same as the export home delivery scheme that car manufacturers offer for overseas visitors. I took advantage of such a scheme many years ago, taking delivery of a new car in the UK (without paying VAT or vehicle licence duty) and then taking it out of the country and continued to use it there for several months before finally registering it abroad. I would have thought that such a scheme still exists today.
