Can anybody give me any advice on the best towing route from Wigan (M6 junction 25) to Ord House in Berwick upon Tweed. I have looked at AA route planner and Via michelin, both giving different routes and a friend has also suggested another route which he thinks would be better with the van.

The 3 routes differ as follows:

AA - 194 miles (4h 10m) M6 to junction 44, then A7, A698, A68, A698

Via michelin - 220 miles (4h 10m) M6 to junction 43, then A69, A1

Friend - 235 miles (???) M6 south, M62 to junction 29, M1, A1

With upto 40 miles variance in routes any advice would be greatly appreciated as to which would be the best.

living in the borders I would say the M6 A69 and the A1 don't know what the A69's like but do know the A698 is a bit of a twisty road

I live in the NE. Your friend's route, although longest, gives you the most dual-carriageway, but the M6 up through the lakes is the most scenic and less busy. The A69 is busy single carriageway from M6 to Hexham, then good dual carriageway and the A1 North of Newcastle is a mix of single and dual. I wouldn't use the other shortest route. Personally, I'd go for the M6, A69, A1 option.

Hi Lee,

We live in Blackpool and often go up to Northumberland.

We travel M6 - A69 to A1 and then straight on up to Berwick.

John is right about the views and the roads are good.

I once tried a "short cut" through Alston along the A686 - it's apparently the highest town/village in England.........I find only drink dulls the memory of that detour;-)
