I am travelling to Durham CC site at Easter from West Cumbria and trying to work out best route.

If I go along A66 from Penrith, is it possible to turn on to the A67 and safely travel through Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland or is it easier to travel on to Scotch Corner then North onto A1.?? Alternatively is it easier to use the A69 Carlisle to Newcastle then turn South on A1?

Brian, the most popular route too/from Durhan and Penrith is over the A66 and on the A1. This is the easiest route but longer than your suggested route via Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland. This route is quite easily dooable and probable a bit quieter then the A66 and A1.

I think it probably depends upon if you want a longer easier route or a bit more challenging but shorter route.

Hope this hasn't confused you.

Graeme.

Much easier to stick to the A66 then A1 north, then off at junction 62. At the top of slip road turn left then get into the right hand lane ASAP as you need to turn right across the duall carriage way and it`s a short distance fro the top of the slip road.

Thanks for the advice - will probably stick to A66/A1
Brian - be aware that if the weather is bad the A66 may be closed to Highsided vehicles which includes caravans. I have my van stored at Grange (Durham) and use both of the routes you were considering without any problems. The A66 is sometimes closed to caravans and highsided vehicles when bad weather is around and you then have to consider the alternatives. Have a good trip and durham site is excellent. Fred

We live in Bishop Auckland and travel the route regularly (no other choice)We manage fine though Barnard Castle may have special events over Easter and tends to be a bit of a bottleneck with traffic at times. You also have to manoeuvre around the narrow main street, the buttermarket in the middle of the road and the narrow bridge with a bend at either end (sort of'S' shaped) This makes it sound really difficult but as I say, we go through there regularly with no problem though we do know the road well. It may be easier going the other way for someone who doesn't know the area. Barnard Castle is a lovely place to visit though

Thanks for that - decided to stick to A66/A1 - will visit Barnard Castle over the weekend, without the van.

Cheers
