We are palnning our first trip to Italy(six weeks end August to September) We have driven quite a lot in France but never crossed the Alps. Can any one recommend a route through Switzerland or Austria suitable for a large single axle van and 4x4 to bring us into the lake Como or lake Garda area. We don' t mind if it is via Gemany or France.

The last time we went to Italy we used the Tunnel de Frejus as our first stop was Lake Maggiore and from there went went onto Lake Como next and then Lake Garda. You can read an account of the trip here http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/The_%20Italian_%20Blog_%202009.htm This year we intend returning to Italy but we only intend to stay near Lake Garda before moving further south. We are therefore likely to use the Fern and Reschen passes. On the way back we will use the Brenner motorway. If you are concerned about roads and gradients the Brenner is an easy route.

As David says the Brenner Motorway is an excellent route and the way we always go to Garda and coming home we come home via Venice, Udine and Villach as we always spend some weeks at our favourite site in Karnten, Southern Austria on the Ossiachersee. Sites etc that we have used for stopping off on various occasions on on my website printed in my signature below.

Hi
We have been going to Garda for a number of years, but not any more, too expensive!! This year we are going past Garda but as always are takeing the same route, which is. Dunkerque to Namur, then down through Luxembourg to Metz, Nancy, Epinal, Mulhouse to Basel. Only 45 miles non moterway and NO TOLLS!! Basel to Luzern then Lugano. Toll for Switzerland 60 euro. Stay there and see both Como and Maggiore. Lugano to Milan then Garda
