Agree with Dusty, they do provide the instructions for a reason. The route should be the most suitable route with the 'van in tow.

Have to agree - the C/C directions can sometimes seem a bit perverse - 'till you get there. Does no harm, though, to ring the site to check up on recent changes such as road works.

Hi martin, have you still got your Carolina? The roads leading into the park are pretty tight so be careful! CC directions are good by the way.

Hiya Brad

Yea we stil got Carolina. Did you pick yours up, do you like it? Have you been to Rowntree Park? ive been looking at maps of york and wondered if just going into york on A59 would be suitable, otherwise i will be going about 15 miles round town with cc directions.

Martin, I can't see a problem using the A59 onto the outer ring road, then picking up the CC directions from the ring road
which is the outer ring road the A1036 or the A1237 is this the road the caravan club tell you not to use. i have been looking at maps of york centre and cant see the problem with going in this way are the road that narrow in york!!!

yes we picked it up. we have been away a couple of times. the first time i injured my back though so my wife had to tow us home.....bit scary as she has never towed anything.......ever! Anyway, we survived and went away a few weeks later and had a much better time. Do you smell gas more than you did in previous vans? ours isn't really smelly but it is more noticable than our other van that just had a normal regulator. we have had it back to the dealer who have said it seems fine though.?? Rowntree park is really good. we have been 3 times now as it is so peaceful yet only 5 mins walk to the centre. if you haven't already, go on a ghost walk. we enjoyed it and it also tired the kids out. We followed the cc directions and got there without any bother...recommended as there are so many one way systems around that part of york. one thing that was a bit of a pain. you have to leave before 12pm which is fine but go to the loo before you empty the one in your van as they clean the toilets at about 11.30. i had to emty it twice within about five minutes.......on the up side, now my wife has done some towing, she may consider having a more active role in toilet duties. ( dream on brad) have a fab time in york and enjoy your summer in devon!

The A1237 & A64 make what is known as the outer ring road. In hindsight Martin you would be ok coming in on the A59. I get into York on business on a regular basis and the roads you would follow this way are accessable with a caravan. I would however time my arrival for after 11am, central York has delivery restrictions after 10am coming in after this time will save the hassle of navgating around parked delivery lorries.

never really smelt gas, was it just the smell of newness being burned off. Are you going away over bank holiday? Did you get an extra electric socket put in next to water heater. The wife used the shower last time we were away and she thinks its fantastic. We think the van is brillant one or two little problems but easily fixed.

having just spoke to warden at rowntree park it seems the people of york dont like caravans going through the town centre and thats why the caravan club tell people coming from the west to follow the cc instructions, this was the only advice the warden could give me offically, but buses and lorriers use town centre!!!!!!!!!!!!

Martin,

A few (well quite a few) years ago we lived in York, and more recently have been back staying at the Rowntree Park site.

Absolutely agree with the CC that by far the easiest route to drive is the A19 from the Southern Ring Road (A64).

The southern part of the A19 is a wide road capable of taking the military traffic from Fulford barracks - you'll have no problems.

Pitch the van, then walk in for tea or coffee in Bettys (St. Helens Square) - take plenty of money - and go downstairs to the toilets to see the mirrors where the WWII bomber crews scratched their names on the glass.

Robert
