My van is coming up for three years old. The metal rim along the edge of the hob has corroded badly and needs urgent treatment but Stoves say that because it's a cosmetic fault, that they won't rectify it under warranty. I am now awaiting instructions from my dealer on how to raise the hob in order to treat the metal myself. What "wonderful quality"

compared to my 5 year old Honda without a blemish on it!!

Hi
This sounds like a "Sale of Goods Act" issue as the hob sounds as though it is NOT "fit for purpose". Your "dispute" is with the dealer who sold you the 'van not the manufacturer. If you used credit card or a credit scheme to buy the 'van the providers of the credit are jointly liable. I would definitely send a letter to the dealer, and credit provider if applicable, stating that the item is not durable and fit for purpose and asking them to repair or replace it. There are lots of websites which can advise on the wording of a suitable letter or the Caravan Club could advise you if you are a member.
I would not attempt any repairs yourself until you have tried the above route.

Before the caravan is three years old write a letter to the dealer setting our your complaint and attaching photos of the failed edges.
As Stoves has also commented tell your dealer you do not accept Stoves comments.
Under SoGA you are entitled to goods of merchantable quality that should not deteriorate the way yours has.
Hopefully Stoves will be reading this Forum and do the decent thing.
As Big Tim says your contract of sale is with the dealer and it is they who must resolve your problem irrespective of what Stoves do.
I think it is high time our major caravan manufaturers took suppliers like Stoves to task where sub standard goods issued.
How do you think Stoves would feel if all dealers put up signs saying Stoves equipment fails in less than three years.

Thanks for the replies, lads. I think I shall follow this through the SOGA route and will let you know in due course how I fare.
Regards

Hi Derek
The metal edge trim of the Stoves hob on our four year old Abbey 620 has similar problems with the enamel bubbling slightly with under surface rust.
Our dealer agreed to replace the part (which forms the side of the oven) under warranty, but they wanted to charge us the best part of £100 labour costs because they said that to replace the part the cooker would have to be removed and re-fitted.
The bubbling hasn't got any worse, we didn't bother with the replacement because of the high labour charge so if the problem gets any worse I'll remove the bubbled enamel and very carefully go over the affected strip with a small brush and matching enamel such as Hammerite.

Hi Derek
Unfortunately yours is not the only hob with this problem. I have the same on my Abbey Vogue which, although now over 4 years old, did, in fact, show the fault well over a year ago. To be honest I didn't think the dealer or Stoves would accept any liability so didn't go down that route but would be interested to know how you get on.
Another fault that mine is showing is the paint along the front edge just above the control knobs. Here the paint has become very crinkled, I assume because of the heat but a recent thought occurred to me. Was / is this paintwork covered in a plastic protection film that should have been removed at PDI and is it the film hat has crinkled? I have been tempted to try a sharp knife under a small bit of it but chickened out in case it makes the problem worse. There appears to be no instructions anywhere about removing the film prior to use but I know it is used extensively in the 'white goods' industries during manufacture.
Any comments would be welcome.

Further to my original post on this subject, I wrote to my supplying dealer two weeks ago, asking for the fault to be rectified. They have responded today, confirming that they will rectify or replace the side flanges on the hob. A satisfactory and honourable response IMO. Incidentally, they told me that the side "flange" which has corroded is not a Stoves part, but a part which Swift use in the installation of the cooker and hob. Anyway the van is booked in for early next year for the work to be carried out ready for next season.
Thanks for your replies to the post and for your concern.
Regards to all
Derek
