Safe bed for baby

We are trying to find a safe sleeping arrangement for our baby who will be 10 months old when we go away in our caravan next month. The caravan is a Sterling Eccles Opal, which has a rear island bed and a lounge with parallel seats. A normal travel cot wouldn't fit in the space between the seats. We've looked at the Samsonite bubble cot to put between the seats, or the Lindam bed guard to use on one of the front seats. Does anyone have any experience of using these in a caravan or have any other tips? Our baby is already very mobile, persistent at overcoming obstacles and curious about what's around her (e.g. sockets, lights, curtains, etc) so whatever we choose has to be pretty foolproof! Also, there is the issue of where to put her to sleep when we are using the lounge after her bedtime. Thank you for your advice.

We have two children under 2 and have caravanned with them both since they were two weeks old through until now. We started using the samsonite bubble when they became too big for a crib, they are an excellent piece of kit and you can feel very safe with baby in it-they cant escape! The bubble is good until they can toddle-after that they will tip it up and roll around like a hamster in a ball-then its time for the bed guard and plenty of pillows on the floor in case they escape!

Hi, we used the samsonite bubble cot for our grandson whe he was 10 months old. It was perfect for him at that age. Trouble is he quickly grew out of it. (I would agree with hamster comment above) They are not cheap so secondhand would be a good plan. The trouble with standard bed guards of course is that once the child is pulling up to standing, as I am sure your daughter is, the child can tip over the top. There have been other threads on this topic, you could try a search (although the search facility on this forum is naff). The layout on our van is double dinette so now we put our grandson (19m) and his mum (or me)on the back bed with him on the inside so he has to climb over her/me to get out! Seems to work.

When our children were little (2 under 14 months old) we had a 3 berth van with a seat across the front

I took off the mattress and cut a piece of plywood the same size as the bed base

This was hinged along the front edge so that it could be stood upright and bolted with small bolts into the van side making an enclosure the size of the mattress

The mattress was then replaced and the baby slept in the carry cot at one end and his sister slept at the other end

That was when she discovered what a good weapon a Babooshka doll can be

I have fixed bunks at the back and a wee girl who could escape from colditz ! so i have bought some play area cargo netting from this site http://www.allplas.co.uk/acatalog/Striped_Play_Net.html

its cheaper than the one,s you buy and you can make it what ever height and length you need.

Rab.
