We had a lovely weekend here in a cabin -special offer and we could bring the dog!

I didnt really like the camping pitches -hardstanding for your tent and very little room -just rows and a road. The caravans wher eno better off -but you have more privacy.

What is it like when the open field is open in August? the facilities are top class and i think when i get my van i will go here off season..peak time i think with so little space could be not so relaxing!

Sue,

We stayed at SB at August Bank Holiday.

The cornfield where they put the tents in August was heaving, it was that busy, but to be fair a lot of people had gone out during the day, and we had booked early enough to have been able to choose what we consider to be one of the roomier touring pitches. You get to know the regulars there, they always seem to re book the same pitch for next time.

We went over the Aug B/H.

The shower block nearest to the Cornfield was filthy within mins of it being cleaned, once a day.

We complained to the management & they said they would look into it. Also said that it would get better when the campers went!!

We asked why they couldn't leave a bucket & mop to clean the shower & they said it was a Health & Safety problem. We said that every other site we've been to leaves a bucket & mop so how can they manage it but not SB!!

The site was in a great possition for getting around the area.

There is a realy good pub, good grub & beer 10 mins walk from the site (The Fighting ****).

Yes Julian is quite right,

The shower block nearest to the cornfield did suffer with the extra holidaymakers there, I have suggested before they need more frequent attantion at peak times. What I do is to go to one of the other shower blocks away from the cornfield (there are 3 altogether) they dont seem to suffer as much.

Also the Fighting Cocks pub it is a cracking place-good choice of beers including several on the handpumps and superb food-not too dear either.

From their website:

"The centre's quirky name has a long history - it can be traced as far as the reign of Henry VII when it appeared on maps and documents as 'Sandyballas' - a description given to the dome-shaped sand and gravel outcrops on the centre's western boundary.

The outcrops were formed in the Eocene era as the great 'Eocene river' - running at about 100 feet above its present level - slackened and deposited sand of considerable depth.

Today's holiday centre is named after those gravel outcrops, many of which remain, the best examples being Good Friday Hill and Giant's Grave."

So there you have it. Nothing to do with golf or beaches.
