after just coming back from a weekend away with no reception for the tv at all, we have been thinking about getting a satellite dish as all the caravans that were sited there throughout the season had them as well as the aerial that is the same on my roof!!

knowing nothing about how to go about one i need some help on a few questions:

do i have to buy a dish like the ones that are advertised for caravans or can i get hubby to rig one up about of an old dish and box and just use a home made tripod?

do they actually work?

would i need an aerial too?

can i take my sky card that i use at home?

is it really complicated to do ( i would only give up and have a beer instead glaring at the dish amd mumbling like a mad old woman!! lol)

or would i just be better and get an aerial, as i have given up on my status 315.

so annoying you buy new caravan, and a new tv to go with it, and you cant watch it ARGHHH!!!( theres only so many times you can walk around a site until you get bored,or bit do death by those bleeding midges!!)

Hi Bev,

satellite does work better than aerial as long as the dish has line of sight to the satellite, which means as long as its not blocked by trees or tall buildings.

You dont have to buy a dedicated caravan type, you can, and many people do use, the sky box from home, and their viewing card, as the box does not have to be connected to the phone line, once your initial contract period is over.

You would not need an aerial as well as the dish and box.

Yes you can use your home viewing card, if you use a different box, you will only get freeview , as far as I know, as the package is linked to your home box, so just take the home box with you.

Once you have set it up once, it only takes about 3 mins to set up again on site.

We use a Suitcase Satellite dish from Maplins, along with our home sky box, and it works fine.

i have looked at the website but sounds a bit complicated, but that could be that i have just finished a 14 hour shift. will have another look, when im more awake.

so do the cheap versions work just as well as the MAXVIEW ones that are on sale at my local Towsure?

i wondered if it was just another way to get us to part with our cash, when a cheaper version will do just the same job?

Everything you need to know can be found here

My set up consists of a second hand sky digi dish (ebay or like me a freinds garage), a tripod, home made is fine, can even be just a pole mounted on jockey wheel if u like, i think tripods are better because they allow better siting of the dish. You can take you card from home BUT you also need to take you decoder from home (they are linked together) If youve had your home sky system more than a year then no problems you can disconnect it from the phone line and take it anywhere, if less than a year, then technically under the terms of the contract you signed you should keep the decoder connected to your home phone line all the time.

Setting it up is dead easy, instructions are on the above website, I dont bother with a sat finder, I had a few practises at home, but also tend to look at houses near sites etc to get the rough direction (to save me messing with a compass)

Regards

As a very basic rule the smaller the dish the less coverage you will get the further south-ish you travel (this means Europe not the UK.

I managed to get asattelite reciever for
