That’s probably your local perception and not necessarily a national position. I came down from Coventry on Saturday evening and followed a gritter from Halford on the Fosse right to the Gloucestershire border. As we were following it another passed in the opposite direction. In our local area the A429/350 had been gritted, and yesterday most of our roads were easily passable. What a novel concept! Gritters actually prepared for the weather in Scotland, whereas here in England................
We live in a close and we are at the bottom of the slope, so don’t expect gritters to do any gritting. About 0.5 mile away there is an estate minor through road which has a grit bin at the bottom of the slope where that road joins another at a T junction. Yesterday I took an empty chicken pellet container and my trowel and put some road rock salt into it. I then used it to grit around the four house at our end of the close. Worked very well.We live in a long cul- de-sac .Haven't seen a gritter down here for at least 20 years. We keep our own bags of. grit/sand..
I tried water softener salt once and it drilled down into concrete on the drive. Never risked it again.I use Granular salt, which is used for industrial dishwashers, for my driveway and footpaths around the house. It is cleaner than "Grit" and it stops the moss growing in the block paving. Last time I bought a 25kg bag it was about £15.
We also got a couple of bags of Rock salt for paths around our bungalowWe live in a long cul- de-sac .Haven't seen a gritter down here for at least 20 years. We keep our own bags of. grit/sand..
Our local council road sweeping truck is “Sweep Caroline”One local authority actually held a competition for school children to name the gritters and there were some real beauties in the list. Must try and read them on the gritters and post the names.
