Scottish Site - Mid February

Good Afternoon,

We are looking to have a long weekend for the kids half term in mid Feb and were wondering if anyone could suggest/recommend any sites.

Minimum requirements are top notch shower / toilet block, playarea and views. The nearer to Dundee the better.

We are currently considering Edinburgh CC, Invercoe and Grantown on Spey.

It feels like I've considered just about every site in Scotalnd, so your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Alex.

Of the sites you mention I would go for Edinburgh for February ... easiest to access should the weather turn (or remain) bad. Nice site and lots to do.

Hi Fab,

Thanks for your comments. The only thing on the downside is that there doesn't appear to be any views.

Definitely an option though,

Cheers,

Alex.

Hi Alex

For Mid February long weekend with kids , it has to be Edinburgh. Loads to see and do ; the kids will not get bored. The city tour buses are brilliant if tehy are running.

Cheers

Thanks for your replies,

Hopefully Highlander will come up with some good suggestions.

Yep, Dustydog, totally agree, lots to do, closer to Dundee, excellent site. Grantown is similar in that it's an excellent site, lots to do, but it also has the views. On the downside it's further away, but Edinburgh doesn't have the views.

Granted, it's not a truly difficult decision as both sites would result in excellent trips, I'm sure.

Any other site suggestions ?

Thanks,

A;ex.

I went to Edingburgh CC site in the kids hols in February last year and the snow was quite bad.

We will not do it again because of that, so this year if the weather is a bit better we are off to York,

Hi,

Thanks Chris, Yes, I'm holding off booking anything until the really bad weather passes. Not too bothered about the cold, but the snow and ice for travelling any distance is a bit off putting.

Hi Gumbo, we're from Dundee, so anything around here would suit. We've already ruled out Brighouse Bay from the distance point of view and are re-considering Invercoe for the same kinda reason. It's about the same distance as Grantown, but the road at this time of year is also a factor. Any suggestions ?

Thanks,

Alex.

Grantown would be our choice, a very well maintained and run site. It's only a short walk into the town. Should be fine on the A9 travelling during the Day !!!

Hi Highlander,

Thanks anyway mate. We were at The Ranch back in November and as you say, great site. The weather was terrible, but the excellent facilities block and pool helped.

We happened upon Dunure, small fishing harbour. Had a wee beach, play park, ruin, harbour and the all important Dunure Inn, which just happened to have the Scotand game on the telly !

Braw find ! Really nice place and family friendly. Thay have a website, if you fancy a peak for future trips.

Will try to remember to report back after Feb trip.

Cheers again,

Alex.

That's way we're leaning to be honest Gumbo.

There's also the leisure centre in Aviemore, for the kids to have a swim, if the weather's really bad.

We've stayed a Grantown a couple of times and always liked it. We considered Edinburgh as it's closer and a site we'd never been to before. Matbe keep it for a short weekend trip during the season.

Not many more options forthcoming, so in a way, at least I've covered all of the bases.

Cheers,

Alex.

I think it was mid November, 12th to 15th. Really windy and rainy. We pitch up the top behind the toilet block, facing the hills.

The windy was so bad that one of the othervan's awnings got wrecked. Shame.

ye were there just before me buddy, the top part is pretty exposed, but there again on the right day it would be brill.

we had the pitch directly in front of the shower blocks, the width of a motorway to turn and reverse in, but it was my first time and it took me about 6 or 7 attempts. the owner offered help but i declined, i had to learn by myself or else i would be relying on others every time we went away. it was fun, and i felt a corner had been turned when i eventually got there.

cheers.

Yes, I remember, loadsa room to get on pitch.

Nice one Highlander, it's all part of the fun. LOL !

It does get easier and you get used to how your own outfit reacts, turns, the length etc.

We had a big 4 x 4 when I first started and the turning circle was terrible. Now tow with a saloon and it's a little easier, especially correcting during the manouevre.

Alex we stayed at Foresterseat CAravan Park tel 01307 818880 just outside Forfar, so not far from Dundee, at the end of last year. Ny first time there and it was really excellent and I'm fussy! Clean warm shower block. It is a small site next to a nature reserve and a 2 minute drive into Forfar. There is a restuarant adjacent to the site which is popular with locals and served very good food with mammoth portions.

Hi Iona,

Thank for your recommendation.

We visit Forfar regularly as have friends who live there, so I just feel that it's bit close to feel like a holiday.

We've taken the plunge and gone for Grantown on Spey. As the kids are off Friday and Monday, we've plenty of time to get there and back. It's somewhere we've been before and like, but find it a bit far for a normal weekend away.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply,

Alex.

Not quite sure what your intentions are? Why the requirement to be near Dundee? If it is a relation issue then fair enough, but for scenery it certainly does not come to mind as near the top of the list. If you wish country scenery then Balbirnie (CC) in Fife could suit, or Scone Palace (C&CC) near Perth. If you wish the normal range of children's playtimes then any city will provide. Edinburgh obviously offers all the attractions a capital city can offer including great zoo, Botanic Gardens, Ocean Terminal, Castle, Palace, Parliament Building, Dynamic Earth, Camera Obscura, umpteen ghost stories and of course lots of shopping experiences. The CC site in Silverknowes is excellent but as for great views, possibly not as there is a bloody great security fence all around it, as the neighbouring council estate is not reknowned for friendly natives. Don't worry they don't bite, just nick what is not nailed down. Most cities have similar so not unusual. However you can visit Cramond and Queensferry quite easily from that end of town. There is a bus stop outside the CC site but I think it only runs in summer months, it is certainly not shown on the current route map, but I could be wrong.

As for your other choices they all have attractions but ............near Dundee? Have you looked at the map? Sorry, but I think you need to prioritise a little more to get a better idea of your requirements. Also remember the weather in February is very changeable. It may be quite good, or as some weather forecasters are predicting, it will be very cold. It will also still be dark fairly early. You mention kids, but no age and 'wish list', so it is difficult to give serious advice. From my past experience as a parent kids usually prefer things that will cost you money, so pick a big city and bring a credit card.

We love this site. The fully serviced pitches were even provided with sky tv!

The walks along the disused railway track are great Part of the way along there is another footpath that climbs quite steeply and give views Grantown from a great height.

Cheers
