Well, the Sedona has come to the end of its life, too much needs doing to it and the cost is much more than it is worth.
So,, I take it along to the scrap yard with V5 and ask them to scrap it please.

Oh no Sir, we cannot do that without seeing your photo driving licence.

I don't have a photo driving licence, mine was issued back in the dark past and is still pristine, never been out of its plastic wallet.

No sir, it does not have a photo on it......have you got a valid Passport?
No, I don't have a Passport, I don't go out of this country so why would I want one?

Do you have a firearms licence? No, I am not a trained killer, don't have a gun , don't need a Firearms licence.
Well, we cannot scrap your car,,,,,,,,,,,,you will have to take it away .

So, telephone DVLA an ask about changing my paper licence for a photo ID one.

No problem, fill in the form on line and we will use your passport photo .
I don't have a passport.
Oh dear, pause..............................

I do have a bus pass with photo on it.....
No, that is not good enough.

Ok you will have to fill in D1 and provide pay slip, P45 or Pension Entitlement authority.

I am retired, don't have pay slips, don't have a P45 and not old enough for State Pension until next year.
Oh!,,,,,,pause..............

Ok, you will have to provide your original Birth Certificate, and Marriage Certificate and N.I Card.

Don't have a N.I card, they didn't issue them when I was 16 , so never had one.

OK forget the N.I card.

But, my Birth Certificate and Marriage Certificate don't have photos on........

That's OK,
Send them in with £20 and we will send you a new licence in 3 weeks.

Has the world gone totally mad?
The car is registered in my name, my bus pass has my name and photo on it, my Bank Card has my name on it, and it is ME that wants to scrap it, it is not as if someone else is trying to scrap it without me knowing..

Rant over. Stop the world I want to get off.

hi Damian, i would say welcome to the nearly retired club, but I retired 3weeks ago. and now have some of the documentation you spoke of,
untill then I was in the same situation, no passport, paper licence,no NI card, and not seen birth certificate since my mother gave it me 40 years ago, bus pass useless as Id, and everyone asking if I was an immigrant or something. makes you wonder!!!!!!.

as for the Sedona have you tried the local council some will take them away for free under the recycling scheme
or put it on flea bay spares or repair and let someone else worry about how to get rid of it

Yes the world is mad, I'm surprise: that they didn't't ask for a blood sample. We are here in sunny Disneyland in Florida and you have to provide a fingerprint to get into the parks.

On a serious note, have you tried we buy any car. They may want just as much I.D. but gave my daughter a very reasonable price for her clapped out 100k+ ; mpg referred to oil, Pegeot

........it has long been the case that being able to prove your identity is very important in today's world.

Scrapping a car is an irreversible act and I can well understand why a licensed scrapper would want to know and record the evidence that the person requesting the scrapping is the legal owner of the vehicle.
Most countries use the ID card system which are required before you can access many services in those countries.
We have never accepted that system so we have to resort to all sorts of means of proving ID.

The best of which IMO as towers of caravans is the photo card driving license.
You can apply on line but will be required to send in an acceptable photo of yourself if you do not have a passport photo digitally stored at the Passport Office.

don't know about Damian !! but i'm 65 and have had one 3 years. I was told they came in at 60 but you had to be 62 to apply, not that they are much good when you are working :woohoo: as the start time for the bus pass is after most people have got to work.

I've just changed my passport, so at last I have one with a pic that looks like me - in the old one I had a picture that was taken on the last day I shaved, before growing the beard I've now had for nine and a half years! I changed my driving licence for a photocard one a couple of years ago as car hire firms overseas were starting to get sniffy about accepting my old style licence. Now of course I have a passport with my new photo, and a photocard DL with a picture that still looks nothing like me! I'm not expecting to hire a car again this year so I won't worry abut that just yet.

I'm only 50 and I have a bus pass! Southampton use the same card (called a smartcities card) for a range of things including library card, pensioners' bus pass and charge card for the toll bridge in the town centre, and just add the appropriate entitlements electronically. Mine obviously isn't valid as a pensioner pass yet, but I'm too scared to try it in case I DO get away with it!

It's all the fault of the Scrap Metal Act - it gives no alternative to photo Id, unlike number plate law which does provide for extra documentation in the event of no photo id.

Recently I took a load of aluminium cans to the scrappie and they can't pay me because, like the OP, I'm old enough never to have needed photo id.

Complain to your MP, threatening to dump the car outside his home !

I got my bus pass in March just before my 62nd birthday
Its great I can use it on ANY train in the West Mids region & any bus in England :woohoo:
Check the detail - Brummies get bus passes covering buses, trains and trams in the "Centro" area, not the wider West Midlands - and the "All England" bus pass is only after 9:30 am.

Anyone entitled to a Blue Badge is entitled of a bus pass, regardless of their age - not a lot of people know that, and it's not widely advertised.

This is why I was one of the apparently laughable minority who favoured ID cards.

Mr Cameron mocked ID cards with his infamous Gestapo-accented "Papers Please" joke, but the fact is that you cannot do anything without papers these days anyway; and in the absence of a national ID card we have to show a whole wad of other papers which we may or may not have.

Like utility bills. Our utility bills were all in my name so my wife had none to show. She wanted to open a building society account and they demanded a utility bill as well as her driving licence. So I had to cancel my account with the water company and my wife re-opened it in hers, then waited a few months for a bill to arrive, just so she could show it to them. Crazy.

People say a passport does the job. I don't have one.

People say a driving licence does the job. My sister-in-law does not drive (or go abroad) and never will. But she had to obtain a provisional driving licence (among other papers) just open a building society account. Barmy.

Unfortunately, these rules are made by people who live a certain lifestyle and cannot imagine anyone living any other way - or if they can, they assume those people must be shady. We have to live in this crackpot situation to humour the paranoia about ID cards

Sir Deli Dave

I think you are secretly leaving the world of caravanning for a DIY motorhome conversion.
I wonder the final colour will be?
