Not sure what you would do on the electric cable, but for other things we carry some long bike-type steel cables and sturdy padlocks.

Pass the cable through a handle on the container and round part of the caravan chassis.

To be quite honest, in the 28 years I've been caravanning I've not yet had anything substancial nicked. (touch wood, stroke my rabbits foot, throw salt over my shoulder).

The vast majority of true caravanners have respect for others property and leave well alone. The only time I touch anyone elses property is clearly if I can see they are likely to loose it IE an awning falling apart in a gale.

I guess it may be a sign of the times, that we need to consider locking barrels to caravans and I expect thhis would be more prevelant on bigger sites.

I've even left my car unlocked outside our caravan all night, but I wouldn't recommend it.

As for caravan security I would fit as many locking devices as possible. Theft of the caravan is far more common but again prevelant at home or storage. Basically the more security you have the longer it takes a thief to steal. They hate wasting time because if they get caught they will have plenty of jail time to refine his/her methodogy.

The only thing I've had nicked was a short filler hose for the aqua roll. I hope it dribbled on the thief's feet :0)

Relax and have fun.

Hi Danny,

I agree with Steve. I've been camping or caravanning for about 30 years and the only time I've had an attempted theft was on my drive at home.

There is a great deal of trust and respect of other peoples property on sites and I for one will give up the whole shebang if I have to lock everything up.

I would agree that getting stuff stolen is a remote possibility. We carry cables/padlocks just in case, but in the last 12 years have only been on 2 sites where we were advised to lock things up....CC Baltic Wharf, and CC Clumber Park.

Hi,

I second Steve here - lock the caravan with hitch lock, wheel clamp, leg locks etc. but everything else should be fine. Only once, on a commercial site near Clacton did we ever hear of a problem, so we packed up and left. Fortunately we never had anything taken, and that was at least 4 years ago so things are not getting worst. To be honest the site was rough and items going missing was just the last straw for us.

Enjoy.

I have to say I have caravanned all my life (well a late starter at 6 months old) and in 38 years have never had anything stolen, however the one thing I do always lock up is the solar panel, i suppose just because it's the single most expensive item after the van. If people want to pinch things they will whatever we do will only slow them down.
