Just a hypothetical question on security.

As I have register my van with Cris and taken out the extra security they offer I was thinking what would I do if I came home one day and found the van stolen.

I suppose I would inform the police first then Cris, then what could I personally do ?

This is just me.

1. I would look at eblog for any van that was mine and pretend to be a buyer.

2. I have made special marks in the van i.e. my post code.

3. Look for gipsy sites to see if they had it.

4. Cry after beating my head against the wall.

5. Wish I taken out insurance.

What would you do, is there any way we could help each other ?

CRIS is not security, as such, it is simply a register of vans which can be checked, and also provide the stencils to mark your van with its chassis number.

Taking your points, 1: It would probably be a long time, if ever, that your van appeared for sale, it would more likely have been broken up for spares or have left the UK entirely.

2 Special marks will be not much use on a broken up van, or abroad.

3, Going around gypsy sites is certainly not recommended, and certainly not encouraged by the residents.

4 No point, if they want it (whoever "they" are) they WILL have it

5 I am puzzled by this one,,,,,,,,,if you have not got insurance now,,,,,why not?

You KNOW it makes sense

Answer to stolen van: Inform Police and get a Crime Number, inform Insurance and choose a new van

Why I have no insurance, I think it maybe I can't afford it.

I could give you the old hard up story like I'm a pensioner with an expensive wife to feed but I will not do that.

I just think insurances are a bit of a rip off.

There must be a cheaper way to make your van more secure.

I suppose if I do get my van nicked I had better not come wingeing to you.

Unfortunately with owning a van comes risks. one of which is it being stolen, others are what happens if whilst unhitching it runs away from you and hits someone else or something else?

What happens if, for argument, your van catches fire and destroys several around you? who pays the compensation?

Without insurance , YOU do.

Yes , Insurance can be seen as a bit of a rip off, but it only takes one big problem to realise that it actually it is worth it.

I would hazard a guess that it would take more than one years premium to replace a stolen van, and in the event of bodily injury to someone else in that event, a lot more than the premium would ever be.

I will ignore the last line of your reply as nowhere in my first posting was I sarcastic towards you, so a reply is not worth the time .

Hello Reg & Pat,

Damian gave you excellent advice and information, in reply to your original questions, to accuse him of sarcasm was out of order. The question you have to ask yourself is can you afford not to be insured, whether it is a rip of or not. If you are unfortunate to have a major problem, can you afford to pay for it, when it may run into many thousands of pounds ?

I agree with Damian, most ordinary people like me cannot afford to be without insurance, and the peace of mind it gives me.

Best regards,

George
