We're buying a 2004 Shogun and need to put a tow bar on. I've heard that you have to be careful with the shoguns so the spare wheel doesn't catch. What is the best tow bar for this car. Thanks

Hi Claire,

I have a 2000 Shogun which is similar to yours - the bar was already fitted when I got it and it's a Brink detachable.

I have found there is enough clearance if you connect straight on but I have the older shorter handle Al-Ko hitch and no wheel cover.

If you have 18 inch wheels and a metal wheel cover and the later type of hitch then you probably have two options - buy the modified shorter clamp arm or connect up with the rear door open.

Hope this helps.

Hi Claire

I own a Pajero, similar to a Shogun, and when you hitch up the Al Co stabiliser handle catches on the back of the spare wheel.

You can overcome this easily by fitting an extension handle to your stabiliser. A really good website for information about Shoguns is http://pocuk.co.uk Their forum will tell you anything that you need to know about Mitsubishi vehicles

Hi Claire,

My 2001 Shogun is fitted with the standard 16" wheels and my caravan has a Winterhoff stabilizer, There is no clearance problem and I just hitch straight up.

Hi Clare

I second David W's answer. The Blue Winterhoff coupling presents no problem but the Red Alko is a pain to connect to the Shogun. You really need the Alko adaptor but at 38 quid, some may say it is a bit of a rip off.

You do not need the Alko adapter. When I bought my new van with the Alko 3004 stabalizer the dealer gave me an Allan Key to remove the red handle piece. All I do now is slide the handle over the stabalizer and use it and then remove the handle when not required. I don't even bother to screw it on as it is such a good fit it will work without the bolt through the handle. The fitter at the workshop said this is what is done in the trade and it is not necessary to but the official attachment.

Had a witter tow bar fitted to my 2006 lwb with the hard cover on the wheel with no problems, the alko stabilizer clears the cover with an inch to spare even the reversing sensors work fine
