We are first timers - and our hopes are being dashed at the moment. We need some advise from all you experts out there.

We are looking at purchasing a 1992 Sterling Sapphire. We have

contacted CRiS who advise us that the van is not recording a stolen or with any outstanding finance - but the current owner is not the registered keeper according to their records.

Can you advise whether it is necessary to register the van with CRiS - as you would a car with DVLA? If we do go ahead with this purchase we do intend to register.

Do you think we should continue with the purchase of this van - or is it dodgy???

We certainly don't want the police knocking on our door in the middle of Devon - and taking the van away in the middle of our holiday.

Thanks very much for your help in advance. Rach.

Rachael, the CRiS scheme is voluntary so there is no legal requirement to transfer the caravan as for a car.

Basically you are in the same position as anybody buying a van prior to the CRiS scheme being implemented.

Can the present 'owner' prove his ownership, has he got receipts, invoices etc. Can he produce any history of ownership, most people have the odd photo showing them using it. Can you reregister the van with CRiS if their last recorded keeper cannot fill in their part of the form? Are CRiS willing to tell you who the last recorde keeper is?

I would advise caution but don't be put off if you want the van and all else rings true. Likewise walk away if you have doubts, there are always other vans, it will only worry you if you feel unsure and spoil your hobby.
