Should we get a stereo as standard on a used van?

Hi all, we are hoping to buy a 2008 Compass Rallye from a dealer, when viewing the van we noticed the radio was missing. In our excitement at arranging to buy it we forgot to mention it, does anyone know if we should get one fitted free from the dealer or does anyone know if stereos were extras on this van? It may have been taken out for security, don't want to go and show ourselves up demanding one be fitted when we should be supplying our own!!! Thanks in anticipation.

it had probably been removed by the dealer to prevent theft. Dealers have to remove clocks, door knobs, trays from drawers as apparantly some caravaners dont buy spares... they just nick them.

Why not check the order paperwork that yo signed when you paid the deposit and see whats supposed to be included, and if its not listed give the dealer a call.
A year or so ago at XXXXXX caravans i was looking at a very nice van with wet heating and all the mod cons when an elderly chap came for a look. We struck up a conversation and he admitted that he had one of these vans and found it a bit heavy and had bought a brand new Mitsubishi 4 x 4. This guy was probably in his mid to late 60's and not short of a few quid.
We left him in the van , and for some reason i popped back in the van to find him disconnecting a light fitting and trying to steal it I noticed that one light fitting was already missing . i did not say anything but popped down to the site office , let then know what was happening and hey preston the police arrived and he was arrested.

This chap was well spoken , well educated and not short of cash .

Hello Lizzie,

The most important thing about buying anything second hand is “caveat emptor” or “Buyer beware”. In essence don’t assume anything always ask, and where possible get it in writing. We see all to often on this forum questions about disappointment when an assumptions were made during a purchase which didn’t materialise after the event.

If you are purchasing the caravan from a dealer, then I would expect the caravan to at least match the specification of the model when it as new. But that might not include gas bottles, battery or EHU etc

But you must be even more vigilant if making a private purchase as in many cases the sale is “sold as seen” which means there is absolutely no legal comeback against the seller, except where the seller did not own the goods, or it was part of an identifiable fraud.

I still find it hard to believe that someone would have the gaul to pretend to be viewing caravans, purely so that they can steal replacement parts!

Interestingly, whenever i've viewed any of the second hand vans at South Yorkshire Caravans i've always had a chaperone (sometimes useful, other times annoying)...Perhaps i look dishonest!

Go over to Sheffield caravans, and you're free to look around..but like your case, they're sensible enough to remove the radios and any other accessories!

As for the other dealers round my way, there really isn't anything worth stealing that i can see!

SYMC has always accompanied viewers simply to stop theft from the vans.
We bought our newt was the van last MArch from Lowdhams in Notts, it was the display model and i kid you not , between viewing it and then putting on the deposit and going back inside ( about 20 mins) the screw cover strips on the heki had been nicked.

Totally incorrect as there is no such thing as "sold as seen" and you do have a legal comeback if the goods are misdescribed. You can verify this with Trading Standards or a CAB near you.
Trading Standards have a case going on my behalf where the seller misdescribed the goods and additionally posed as a private indidvidual when in fact they are a trader. the caravan was sold to me as a 1992 caravan in the VIP range when in fact it was a 1990 basic caravan. TS do not take on these cases unless they know they are going to win.

Hello Surfer,

It's all very well quoting a posters words, but please read and understand them first.
The sale you relate was neither Private, and it was misrepresented, which constitutes a fraud. Those are the reason that TS are taking an interest.
Sold as Seen is recognised in law for PRIVATE transactions.
If it were a genuine private transaction, it is assumed that the purchaser has availed themselves of all the relevant information by asking questions and inspecting the goods and are thus satisfied that the goods are what they want. The seller is duty bound to answer any questions as honestly as possible, failure to do so may be fraud. as soon as the sale is agreed and the transaction has taken place, the title to the goods warts and all become the purchasers responsibility.

Hi Lizzie
Why not simply ask the dealer if there is a stereo included with the caravan? For what they cost it's not really worth demanding a stereo but, nothing ventured nothing gained, just ask politely. You won't have shown yourselves up by asking and a nice pleasant approach often works wonders.
The dealer might have removed the stereo to prevent theft or it might not be included but it's not worth spoiling the enjoyment of your new caravan for because you can easily buy a serviceable stereo for about £40 and a fairly good one for around £70

Its not just the general public that steal from vans,i remember looking around vans at a big dealer when one new show van looked like it had been trashed with cupboard doors missing and general other bits missing too ,only to find it was the dealer robbing them to make the vans going out good.

If it was included in the specification when the van was new & there was a slot & wiring for it, I would certainly expect it to be included in a 2nd hand caravan.

Hello Nick,

I tend to agree with you, but consider the possibility that the previous owner may have had the radio stolen, and never replaced it so it was not present when the dealer took the caravan.
