Would love to hear of any recommendations for a site to stay at for visiting the areas of Cheshire/Lancashire this summer. Also have you any ideas on good family days out with a 2 year old boy while we're there? Never been to this area of England at all so help needed. Thanks

I would recommend the Caravan Club sites at Chester Fairoaks and at Blackpool South. Both sites up to the usual club high standards, and each convenient to their respective towns of Chester and Blackpool.

Blackpool has all the its seaside attractions plus Tower and Pleasure Beach. Chester is a lovely town to visit plus the site is handy for a famly day out to the well laid out and large zoo.

Cinema and large shopping area within walking distance from site plus Blue Planet aquarium (wasn't too impressed with that though).

There is a CC site described in the book as Wirral Country Park, West Kirby. It is in fact at Thurstaston. This is a lovely area to stay in and we were lucky to get a pitch with views across the Dee Estuary.

Southport Caravan Club site is handy for going to Liverpool and Formby which has a wonderful beach and a reserve for red squirrels. You can buy bags of nuts to feed them.....must be the best fed squirrels in Britain.

K hope your not expecting too much from blackpool, we live only 60 mile away and in the ten years i have had a caravan we have never once been to blackpool it is a filthy disgusting dreary rip off place, if you insist on visiting take out a large loan and hide any young childs face as its the only place in england where you can buy a stick of rock and a sex toy from the same shop.

As has been said all the club sites are fine, personally i would stay in chester or southport, willow bank in southport is very nice as is the plassey which is not too far from chester in wrexham.

Liverpool is the city of culture but i have found it to offer nothing more than any other big city has to offer just loads of shops and chocking fumes.

We used to use a site called The Royal Umpire near Chorley. It's ideally situated for Blackpool, Manchester, Chester, Alton Towers and the Lake District - all no more than 1.5 hours drive. Blackpool is about 25 mins drive. I agree with Icemaker - Blackpool can be pretty dire, but is OK for an afternoon at the Pleasure Park / Tower etc.

The site used to be OK with a couple of pubs within walking distance where you can get a nice meal.

Try the camping and caravan cl at Marton called Chippendales in the big sites book and you need to be a member.12 pound a nite for a pitch. with showers, toilet, fridges ( your use) washing machine and tumble dryer as well. 01253 697481. Ask for George. Also quite near by is Mariclough Hampsfield site. Thats adults only. Also in the book . Sorry dont have their phone number. Been to both and they are excellent.

Hadn't planned on spending too much time in Blackpool but after what you've said we'll maybe give it a miss altogether. Maybe just pop by one afternoon for a bag of chips on the prom and a Kiss me Quick hat!
