Does anyone use one of these for towing. We were going to get a Volvo S80 D5 to tow our 2006 Sprite Major 6,but a friend in the trade says these are really good value.Max tow on Volvo is 1800kg,but only 1600kg on Skoda would this be a good match for the Sprite.Would appreciate any advice, thanks

The Skoda is just a slightly stretched Passat, and is a competent tow-car.

I did 130,000 miles in a Passat 130 Sport towing a `van and a horse-trailer with ease.

The engine is more vocal than the Volvo (unless you are looking at an early Volvo with the Audi 5-pot which is gutless), but pulls harder from low down which is good for towing. You can expect 30+ mpg when towing.

My boss is on his third S80 which is an excellent cruiser, but not my cup of brew. Their list price seems high, but there are big discounts out there as they aren`t exactly flying out of the showroom, and if buying used they dont hold their value as well as the `premium` brands they are pitched against.

The biggest problem the Skoda has is the brand snobbery which exists.

A friend has 1.9 diesel Skoda bought at 14 months old with a DSG 6 speed box. Used for long distances it returns high 40's mpg on Uk Motorway and over 51/52 on regular runs to Paris at around 80mph rather than our 70mpg.

Both ront seats fully adjustable and he is very impressed with ride and the comfort. It has extended service and runs expensive fully synthetic oil, but service is a lot cheaper than his last Audi or a friends Seat with similar engine.

Power wise he very happy solo, so if it has the capacity it sound like a reasonable buy.

Hi all,

I had a Passat 130tdi sport [2001] a couple of years ago and it was an excellent car both solo and towing, 52mpg solo, 27mpg towing at 60mph and 37mpg towing at 50mph.[Caravan was 1400kgs]

The Skoda is a Passat with a longer wheelbase, which can only make it more stable when towing, the badge is not as good but the price and spec is better and cannot be ignored.

Also a 2.5v6 tdi is available in the Superb, I had a 2.5 in an Audi A4, loads of power, very smooth but only around 40mpg solo and mid 20s towing, mine was a 180bhp quattro which was over 1600kgs so the 2wd Skoda fitted with the 163bhp version may be a bit more economical, but after owning both, based on costs the 1.9tdi 130 would still be my choice due to the excellent all round economy even though the Audi was a bit more fun to drive but I did pay for it with the fuel costs.

Skoda Superb is a really a long wheel base passat and we have 9 of them at work. All of which have had no downtime with one having clocked 42K in 16 months ! so far apart from normal servicing which is far cheaper and better from a Skoda dealer than a Audi one it's had two front tyres replaced at 36K that all

It is - no pun intended a superb car

Regards
