Andrew,

Your Nissan engine should be Euro III compliant, so it shouldn't smoke too much - but full throttle acceleration may over-fuel the engine.

If this is a case of over-fuelling, then the causes could be:

Dirty or partly blocked injectors - which cause the injectors to spray drops rather than a mist - the drops don't burn anything like as cleanly as a mist - and black smoke is the result.

If you've had the car ECU "chip-tuned" for more power / torque, then it may just need the tuning reducing to stop the smoke.

The fuel pump pressure or fuelling system may be over-fuelling and need adjusting - dealer visit.

But if you have a warranty with Nissan then take the car to the dealer and ask them to fix it - assuming it is covered by the warranty and they aren't going to charge you.

I agree with everything Rob says but In my experience it would be worth trying a couple of doses of injector cleaner first - I have cured smoky Nissan and Peugot diesels this way. In fact I currently use a can of cleaner every 3 tankfulls as a precaution and it make the engine run noticably sweeter, start better as well as a stopping the smoke.

You don't say the mileage or type of use but have alook at the air cleaner too, if it is dirty that can cause smokey running and that's another ceap easy cure.

Not advertising but any proprietry brand of cleaner works well enough although I use Comma because it's the cheapest

I find that Millers diesel fuel additive is an excellent product.

As above comments from others but look at all the pipes to the intercooler/turbo for splits and check the intake to the air filter for blockages.

Hi ,

i had the turbo and intercooler go on my 05 2.2 dci 6 months after i bought , this was followed by loads of black smoke and loss of engine power . if no loss of power on yours then its not that . the 2.2 dci engine is a renault unit and they do produce a bit of smoke when accelerating hard , i would suggest you use injector claner often and don`t let the tank run to low . has anyone else had the turbo fail on their x trail ? steve
