To all you Sorento owners out there. If you're wondering how well the Sorento does off road, I can tell you it does as well off as it does on and as it does towing, truly a surprising car!

Hi Lol

Yes very impressive - and your technique in the "water splash" was truly excellent. The idea is to create a bow wave in front of the car so that the engine etc is in a trough where the water is lower.

If you look at the pictures via Steves link you will see you have the perfect bow wave!

Good day wasn't it!

Thanks again not only to you, Clive for organising it, but also to the GLASS representatives, a good job by all and most informative.

Hi,

I agree. I took mine out witha 4*4 club onto Salisbury Plain last November. Over a 75 mile route about 40% was on tracks and rough ground. On its standard tyres it performed really well, although I did chicken out on a section of deeply rutted track where other cars had grounded on the center ridge and the Kia was gently scraping its undershield. I could not put one set of wheels up the side as the side was sheer hedge so I founda turning spot and drove her out. I don't plan to do it again as it took 4 hours to hours it clean again.

All,

With KIA having a significantly longer warranty period than the average manufactures what is their position on failure or accelerated wear on a vehicle caused by green laneing or offroading ???

My mother law had had a warranty claim with Honda some time ago and she how to sign a disclaimer promising that her CRV hadn't been of road before they would proceed with the repair which is ironic as it was a recall at their request

Kindest regards Monkeys husband

I wouldn't say 3 years is significantly longer than other car manufacturer warranty's. I would also presume that it would be difficult indeed for Kia to back out of a claim if that claim involved what the car is built to do. I can see why, if damage occurs during offroading, a claim could be refused, much the same as if any car was being improperly used. What was your mother in laws claim? Was it relative to the drive system or chassis of the CRV?

It's a first to my knowledge, a car company building a 4x4 offroader that isn't allowed off road. Are you sure you are explaining the facts Monkeys Husband?

Best Regards

Lol

if you are suffering with scratches have you tried the heavy duty cling film down the sides of the doors, it works wonders.

Hi Paul - I can vouch for the use of plastic film on cars where they may get scratched - I think Geoff from GLASS was suggesting it as well on Sunday.

Never used it myself but will try to find out a bit more about it. - where do you get yours from Paul?

Warranty claims should not be a problem even if the vehicle has been used on a green lane - the reason being that a BOAT (Byway Open to All Traffic) is still part of the Queens Highway so technically it is not "Off-Road". Off Tarmac maybe - but what about all those CRV owners who tow a caravan and have to leave the tarmac to park the caravan on a CL or any field?

Technically that is more "Off-Road" than anything we did on Sunday!

Plus the fact that the advertising for most Off-Roaders show the vehicle doing normal off-road things - therefore highly unlikely that a warranty claim would be challenged unless there were clear signs of abuse.

OK - I'll just sit back and wait now.

Hi Lol,

I thought that Kia's warranty was 5 years or is that their sister brand ?? The car (CRV) had to have a new rear wheel spare carrier fitted but I thought at the time

A) it's ironic as they recalled it

B) exactly your point it's a 4 x 4, but I can see their point because after all it's additional drive system and not care blanche to actually use the vehicle off road. It may not have been intentionally designed for that.

After all the Nissan X Trail is made in a 2 wheel drive format and to me and probably every one else it's a 4x4 and yet it isn't I think the Darcia Duster was based on a similar marketing ploy.

Talking to someone Insurance costs for cars and he was saying the funniest thing he heard was Norwich Union who use a call centre based in India trying to explain their damage policy for 4*4's especially when they call the windscreen a windshield. My father law was under the impression they won't insure you offroading

K Regards

Hello MH, you are thinking of Hyundai, the parent company of Kia for 5 years warranty.

There are quite a few examples of cars being made in four and two wheel drive, pickups being quite common. There are also cars that look like they should be four wheel drives but are not, the Talbot Rancho being the pick of that particular bunch. If however offroading is intimated at, even just for advertising purposes, then you should reasonably expect to use the car off-road. More important, how does the dealer know where and when any excessive wear occurred? I'm sure Norwich Union wouldn't insure for offroading, NU are not alone where that is concerned, the only way of insuring a car would be through a specialist insurance policy and I doubt that would cover much anyway. Green lanes, as Clive points out, although they may get a little rough, are still classified as roads. At the end of the day, you pay your money and take your chance, glad I did, and the fun was great.

Best Regards

Lol

Sureterm do full cover for on and off road with whatever limits you choose. It is even cheaper than the main bunch..

NFU also do insurance for off road use, but not sure how much

Any insurance company will insure you for anything (even alien abduction!) but you have to ask for it - the insurance cover that is.

NU provide so-so cover at an average price for the average motorist. They play the averages more than most and have a relatively poor claims history. Their admin can also be truly diabolical. When NU merged General Accident (very good) with Commercial Union (so-so), we wondered if they would call themselves "Commercial Accident". Instead after much thought they have called themselves "AVIVA" - sounds too much like an old Vauxhall to me

If you have a 4x4 and use it on untarmaced roads it is better to tell your insurance company. Try Adrian Flux or NFU - usually less expensive than the big companies, better service (UK based!) and if you ask them they confirm in writing that off-road use is covered.

Use in competition - say RTV Trials is obviously excluded.

Hi,

KIA could hardly buck the issue when thier adverts and rear window sticker advertise that it was 4*$ magazines car of the yaer in 2004. It would hardly get that accolade if it was not meant to venture off road. I think that in the event of damage to the car the onus would be on the driver to prove that the vehicle was not being used improperly. There lies the catch with any 4*4 used off road. Guilty until proven innocent

NFU are great if you off road and do a big mileage. Adrian Flux won't cover my Discovery 3 off road as they have a maximum value limit.

Clive V there is a firm in Soton that sell film that is used for protecting carpets.

One of my clients runs a carpet firm - I will ask him about it.

Presumably if if protects carpet and is non damaging to carpet it will not damage paintwork either?
