Just come back from our caravan holiday in Cork. I couldn't believe the price of beer. £10.20 for 4 cans of lager. Just as well we took our van, and our own food. I don't think we could have managed it without our caravan.

Pat - it's the Euro! Going abroad now into the euro zone is very expensive. I recently went back to France after some years away- couldn't believe how dear everything was! After recently having a fortnight in Devon with glorious weather - Britain, with the right weather takes some beating!

I have to say that the amount of empty shop units in Northampton is quite high. Large industrial units standing empty with building almost at a standstill. House prices have dropped a lot, and no wage rise for the last 2 years. I'm glad we've got a caravan.

I'm glad my caravan fridge is only small and won't fit a full lamb in it, I'll stick to the 4 lamb chops I can afford LOL.

The prices in other countries (even in different parts of the UK) are normally proportional to the wages in that area to the greater extent. As an example in the North of England your

I travel to Southern Ireland 3/4 times a year fishing and have been doing so for about 22 years.

It allows used to be the case that it was cheaper to go across the border for shopping especially fuel.

Then for many years Southern Ireland was very cheap and I can well remember about 6 years ago paying 49 cents for a litre of diesel in Dublin.

We are back to the old days again and I see hundreds of people where I fish in Ballyconnell going over the border to Enniskillen for their months shopping in the supermarkets.

Alcohol is slightly different as the Irish imposed an increased tax on it some years ago.

Somebody told me that 20 fags are about 9 Euro in Eire now.

I'm glad I've never smoked.

My cousin said that he paid 26 Euro a night in July on most sites inc EHU for just him and his wife no matter what the standard.

They don't eat out and regular take away fish n chips in Waterville cost 20 euro for very nice but small portions. Plus it rained during every day of their 22 days.

But they love it so much they are going again next Easter with plenty of supplies.

Plus taking all dog food as they found it very expensive for their two dogs LB, even Tesco Eire was far more expesive than UK for dog food. No pet passport for Eire.

Gawd no wonder when I went to get my car washed at ARC today the carpark was full of travellers and their vans, all with Irish number plates.

What's the betting that the plumbing from the car wash has gone by morning ... heh! heh! heh!

Yep.

We paid 25 euros a night in mid September. No kids, no dog, no awning just me and my wife. It's a shame really as it's a beautiful country. Didn't see many caravans but loads of motorhomes.

We were going to Eire this year but cancelled our trip due to the increased cost of things there. We have been every year for the past 4 but it looks like our trips will have to wait until things settle down a bit.

The country has been living off borrowed money for so long.

When we first went 5 years ago we couldn't believe how busy the shops were. They were packed with people spending money as if it was going out of fashion. Not so the last time we went 18 months ago.

I had 12 business trips to Dublin 3 years ago.

I couldn't help seeing all the large signs at the airport "paid for with EU Grant money". I've seen the same in Scotland and Wales but not in England.

I think I'll stick to England for a while and see what happens.

Cheers

Living just over the border in Northern Ireland, we have lots of southern people coming to do their shopping coming up to christmas it will be worse you wont be able to get a park in the supermarket car parks. If you want to come to Ireland, don't forget Northern Ireland, we are very friendly folks and the scenery is every bit as nice if not nicer than the south.

Quite agree. We were there for a week this summer and it was beautiful and cheap too. I'd been warned about Ireland and thought it'd be the same in Northern Ireland, especially the tourist bits such as Giant's Causeway, but actually I was very surprised how many things were actually free. We'll be back!

Hi Olive,

I'm sure Northern Ireland is beautiful. We will get there. We went to Cork because I was brought up there by my grandparents until I was 15. I had not been back there since 1970. My wife has never been so we took the opportunity to go back to my roots.( I was born in Northampton )
