Quote "Fitting a fader in the speaker wires"
Unlike the volume and fader control on the radio - which changes the signal level before all the amplification - fitting a volume control in the speaker wires has to deal with the amplified signal - 12V and several amps.
So conventional "carbon track rotary potentiometers" won't work - the carbon track will die as soon as it sees 100mA - you need a high current, low resistance, stereo volume control. And instead of a carbon track, these use a coil of resistance wire
There are several manufacturers, like the Speco Technologies 10 Watt volume control, that will reduce the amplified signal heading to the speaker.
