Hi

This weekend hubby asked me to sit in the van and write a step by step idiots guide so that we can laminate it and take it with us. This guide was to be from arriving on site the first steps we needed to do after unhitching the car and winding down the steeadies etc so that we dont look silly as newbies. I thought it was cold and would start by putting the fire on. I sat and read through the Baileys literature and after 2 hours (Yes 2 hours) I finally managed to put the fire on electric. After an hour the van was still cold. I went to B&Q and bought 2 small fan heaters. When hubby returned I had not got far as could not remember what I had been shown on the handover. I have search high and low on the tinternet as I remember someone typing a step by step procedure from setting up to dismantling and how to empty to casettes etc. I dont even know where the 12V switch is to switch over to the car (I know I am thick as two short planks). Hubby has now gone to conference until tomorrow night and I want to suprise him with this laminate. I have also posted this on another site too hoping I will get it sorted by today.HELP!!!!

Hi HIlda

These are my checklists I don't know if it will help but it may give you a starting point. As you will see we have a motor mover so you will have to adjust that bit if you don't have one.

LEAVING HOME

1. Connect to electric & switch fridge to mains to chill.

2. Flush water tanks with Milton (start of season only). Empty tanks if necessary.

3. Check everything stowed securely. All doors, rooflights & windows closed/clipped.

4. Switch fridge to 12 v setting & secure door etc. Control panel set to "Off".

5. LPG off and secure. Battery OK.

6. Mains cable disconnected from power first then caravan & then stowed.

7. Check all tyre pressures & wheel nuts (incl spare).

8. Remove wheel clamp & hitchlock. Switch on and wind on Motor Mover. Raise 4 corner steadies.

9. Handbrake fully released. Hitch up. Raise jockey wheel to highest & clamp. Attach breakaway cable & check stabiliser engaged. Connect 12 v cable & check all lights & mirrors ok.

10. Switch off and wind off Motor Mover. Stow towball cover & motor mover control.

11. Stow drill, levelling blocks, chocks & step. Lock door.

12. Check caravan level or slightly nose down. Car Level.

Stop after 20 miles to check all still ok, nothing moved, wheels cool, no cables trailing etc.

1. Check in with site warden & reverse or drive onto pitch.

2. Disconnect breakaway cable & electrics. Unclamp & lower jockey wheel. Unhitch, disengage stabiliser. Apply handbrake.

3. Switch on and Wind on Motor Mover. Release handbrake. Move caravan into position.

4. Check levels with spirit level & adjust using ramps & jockey wheel. Move wheels till ok to fix wheel clamp. Apply handbrake. Lower corner steadies.

5. Switch off and wind off Motor Mover. Stow control safely.

6. Move car, put towball cover on, remove extending mirrors & check tyre pressures.

7. Connect mains cable to caravan first then to power.

8. Connect fresh & waste water containers. Fill and add chemicals to toilet tanks.

9. Control panel set to 'van'. Switch on pump. Purge water heater by running hot tap till running freely.

10. Connect/switch on LPG. Switch fridge to gas/mains. Switch on water heater gas/mains.

11. Apply hitchlock, wheel clamp and Hitch Head cover.

12. Assemble awning.

Put kettle on or open bottle of wine and relax.

LEAVING SITE

1. Awning down.

2. Disconnect water & waste hoses & empty tanks.

3. Check everything stowed securely. All doors, rooflights & windows closed/clipped.

4. Switch fridge to 12 v setting & secure door etc.

5. LPG off and secure. Battery OK. Control panel set to "Off".

6. Mains cable disconnected from power first then caravan and then stowed.

7. Check all tyre pressures & wheel nuts (incl spare).

8. Remove wheel clamp & hitchlock. Switch on and wind on Motor Mover. Raise 4 corner steadies. Handbrake fully released.

9. Hitch up. Raise jockey wheel to highest & clamp. Attach breakaway cable & check stabiliser engaged.

Since doing these lists I have now refined them to one list for Departure and one for Arrival on either side of a sheet which is laminated. I also reduced the size and copied it to postcard size, which is handier.

Hope this helps

Hello Hilda

There's a lot to remember just 'off the top of your head' and as newbies don't worry about looking silly, just concentrate on enjoying relaxing breaks in your caravan.

The laminate is a good idea and a look through the other sections of this website will help.

Sophie has provided an excellent guide which I will copy because this topic often comes up on the forum, thanks Sophie.

On the blue panel under the Practical Caravan logo on this webpage click Home Page.

In the purple coloured helpline section click on Beginners and you will find plenty of useful information to help you get started.

There are some good pointers in the top tips section as well.

I'm sorry that I can't help with the position of switches etc on your Bailey because I own a Swift Group caravan but if you are on a site and you are stumped never be afraid to ask someone.

Most caravanners in my experience are friendly and will be happy to help you, everybody had to start somewhere and we've all been newbies once.

Enjoy your new caravan

Hello Hilda

Welcome to the world of caravanning. My partner and l are are new to caravaning, we started last year and are still learning. Have picked up a lot of tips on the forum and l have found that if one person cannot help you somebody else can. We have a bailey ranger S5 470/4 and on our switch panel there is no switch on it to connect to car, you just plug in on car and switch on master switch, may be somebody else can help too?

Happy Caravanning.

Hi, Hilda

Reading through your blog that is brill, I could not help but notice that you made reference to the fact that your new Bailey Limousin was found to be cold after an hour when running on electric side of the fire. I also had to purchase secondary heating for my van at B & Q.

Have you noticed that when you run the fire on electric with the fan switched on, very little heat if any seems to arrive at the venting points. All seems OK on gas, but its the electric side of the fire that interests me.

I have reported this issue to Bailey and my retailer.

Regards

Bob
