Stolen gas locker lid

Hi guys, we bought our first caravan in April this year, did a trip to the lake district and was planning to do another, however our caravan gas locker lid has been stolen, it is a generic circular key to unlock the lid. I check the local area but could not find any sign of it, it was in good condition, I believe someone with a caravan has needed a replacement lid and used their own key to take the lid off. I am really gutted....it cost us £3000 for our first caravan and it is a Compass Lynx 340 2001 model. I've tried to look online for replacements but cannot find any. Oddly they left the gas bottle in and spare wheel so they must have just needed a lid replacement! Any ideas on where I could get a replacement from otherwise we are completely stuck....I have tried ebay, but cannot find anything. Any help would be appreciated so much.

Thanks

Peter

Cheers mate. I tried there first but they don't have the lid for my model of caravan. I assumed somewhere might produce them using a 3d printer or something new if needed but it appears nowhere does this.

There are some real low life people out there - oddly enough I previously owned a compass 340 lynx and some low life stole the awning light cover - hope you find what your looking for

caravanshowertrays.co.uk advertise fibreglass replacement trays - is it possible that they could also make up a locker door - or would you have the skill to make a mould and make a DIY lid?

caravanbreakers.net or brooksidecaravans.co.uk might be worth a look - they have loads on the website, but of course there are hundreds of differs. If they haven't an original they might offer further advice.

Good luck in your search and bad luck - unfortunately some don't seem to have any scruples at all, leaving you with the problem.

yeah it what happens in the caravan world. someone breaks or loses theirs and a cheap supply is someone else's ever lost a water hog or waste container a step or awning strap or pegs. when the van is left all day on site. that is only one stage away from a gas locker lid. storage yards are easy pickings for them. at home CCTV helps track the culprits [you would be surprised just who they are. [you probably know them].
as for the OP I would be surprised if the dealers could not supply one. if not how would they do any repairs if it got damaged. also contact your insurance [you are insured aren't you] theft is covered on most policies let them source one and get it fitted. just a thought.

Not sure the insurance will be any great help. Most limit the claim on items no longer available to the last list price for that item and if you have an excess of £100 or so then the claim could be minimal.

yeah but it's still worth a shot at least you get a working van again. if one is impossible to source the van could be classed as a total loss. then the payout would be higher. you can buy the van back from the insurance company [usually for scrap value]. then pay to have a custom one made for the van and your back to square one.

Unfortunately if the item cannot be sourced then I am afraid all you get is the last list price of the item less the excess in most cases.

but surely Ray you insure the whole van not just it's individual parts. if something is stolen that renders the van unusable then the whole van becomes subject to a claim. if only the cost of replacing if the missing item/s [inc sourcing and fitting] if this is not the case it must be unique to van insurance.
in which case remind me again how much does it cost to insure a caravan.

Colin, I thought that but having read the CC policy it is not the case. Given that many parts are not available after about five years and sometimes less I can see the reason, although it is hardly fair on the customer.

"not fair" I would call that a right rip off. it throws up some interesting scenarios though. your 5 year old van get stolen the police recover it but it's missing the door, locker covers. and wheels. the insurance then will only pay for the cost of a replacement door wheels and locker front. but nothing else even though the van is now effectively a write off dumped miles away. I would hope the insurance ombudsman would help. they say read the small print on policies and the CC is supposed to be a good one.

Sorry guys for the late reply, tried all these websites and still can't find a panel. Sadly insurance was not worth claiming on due to voluntary excess and no part being available as some have mentioned. Think i'm out of options really. Only option left is to make my own panel out of wood, which is really not ideal but i cannot think of anything else.

Thanks for the suggestsions though. Appreciate them!

There are specialist companies who repair damaged vans or restore older ones. I came across three st last years October show at the three counties show ground. They could probably make a replica. Sorry can't be more specific as their business cards are some 550+ miles south of me.

It would be worth talking to your local Explorer group dealer if you haven't done so already. They may have trade contacts who are able to source the part.

This is a problem but if you got it written off then premiums would rocket. I know it is no consolation though but it is the more specific bits that are a problem and wheels, doors and locker doors other than the front one are not likely to be a problem.
