Hi All, we are planning a trip to Interlaken from Mid Beds, our first venture abroad, not counting Wales ! At the Mo we are planning the route and wonder if anyone has any advice on said route and where is the best place to rest up , ie how far into the journey (we share the driving)and any sites near, also advice on tolls and road tax would be appreciated, thank you.

we always go the A1 now, a few miles more but quicker. The good news is, when they finnish this bit of the M1, they start on the next bit, for a few more years of roadworks !

In terms of total distance, there's not much to choose between a quick route using toll motorways in France (via Reims, Metz, Strasbourg) and an alternative, still predominantly using motorways, but avoiding tolls (by going through Belgium, Luxemburg). The toll alternative will just cost you about 65 Euros extra. Don't forget that either way, you'll need a sticker for both car and caravan when travelling through Switzerland and they cost 40 Swiss Francs a piece.

These stickers for Swiss Motorways, do you need them both ways, and do you get them before or at the border ? Thank you for your advice.

Paul - regard them as road tax disks. In Switzerland they last for a whole year, that is why they are expensive (but coast less than paying tolls, unless you do a very low mileage). In Austria they are cheaper because you can get them for shorter periods.

Sorry Paul - forgot to answer the other part of the question. You get them at the border - just park up and go in the office. I think you can get them in advance, but probably not worth the hassle

Regarding the origional question about a stopover en route to Switzerland I would connsider the Municipal at Chalons en Champagne for the first night 200 miles from Calais and about half way.

The vignettes, one reqd for car and another for caravan, can be ordered online from My Switzerland.com without difficulty. You are then waved through at the border.

we went to Interlaken in September and stayed 2 weeks at Manor Farm. Booked this site and the ferry through CC.

We travelled down through France and stayed 4 nights at Camping du Lac de la Liez in Langres (about halfway) and then stayed the night on the return at the same site. This site was booked direct as although it's in CC book their allocation of pitches was fully booked.

We bought the Vingettes on line as Steve says and were not stopped at the border in either direction.

2 years ago we bought our Swiss motorway sticker at a German service area about 20 miles from the border over the counter when purchasing fuel
