Hi

Can anyone suggest a good van for a first timer, needs to be a 4/5 berth. I know alot depends on its previous owner/care, but something that has had the potential to be robust & hard wearing, On a limited budget as you can imagine with 2 year old twins :) Dont really want to go any longer than 17/18 ft Cheers

Hi Mary

First of all you need to find out what your towcar can safely and legally tow.

Have a browse through Towing Law to determine the weight limits for your vehicle and to check on the law regarding driving licences.

A browse through the Features Archive from the Home Page sums up some of the points to look out for more eloquently than I could.

There is further advice in the Beginners Guide on buying a used tourer.

Have a look round dealers forecourts, sit inside the different caravans to see what you like and dislike, decide on your budget and if you need more information just ask on the forum.

At that sort of price it's all going to be down to how well the previous owner(s) have looked after it. If it's been serviced, had the seals checked against water ingress, and had the inside well looked after then it won't matter what make or model it is. Look for a genuine owner, who knows everything about the van, and still takes pride in it.

If you can buy from someone like that you may get all the 'extras' you need thrown in with the sale. We found the best source was the 'Customer Ads' in our local supermarkets (our first van cost us
