Suggestions for a nice dry spot for an early October break?

Previously I had decided to visit the Lakes for a break in early October, but I found some weather stats and it seems that there is usually a lot of rain in October in the Lakes. I know, its obvious, thats why there are lakes! However, the spring is supposed to be the driest time, so will go then.

This brings me back to October. Where could I stay for a week, two adults, no kids or dogs, where it wont be almost constant rain. I have health problems which are exacerbated by dampness. I would like somewhere within about 150 miles of S.Yorkshire, but not the East (Yorks & Humberside) coast which I have done to death. Can anyone help?

Have you 'done' the Yorkshire Dales or is this beyond the 150 miles? The eastern side of the Dales, to wards Harrogate seem to be drier than the west side. We used to live in Nidderdale near Pately Bridge and I still feel it was a drier area than where we are now (Cotswolds). There are some beautiful places to visit and great dog walks. Try Brimham Rocks.

Hope this helps

I am considering the Dales, o/h seems to have an irrational dislike of Norfolk which I dont understand ... I wouldnt mind going again. Went as a child.

I am still thinking go to the lakes, find an area in the rainshadow of the hills where the rain is less ... dont know if this will work.

Keeping our options open, thanks for your suggestions, keep em coming!

Have just have a lovely few weeks at Holgates Caravan Park in Silverdale nr Carnforth. Its just below the lakes and an easy run, but the weather seems dryer there! Great site with lovely restaurant and heated indoor pool. Ideal to still visit lakes or morcombe/ Lancaster. Good Luck with your hunting and enjoy! Only slight drawback is the narrow road to the site for the last mile.

Please dont take offence, but this is a little expensive for us at 27.75 a night. It does look beautiful though!

The C&CC have 2 smashing sites on the edge of Derwentwater (Keswick), I am not sure if you need to be a member to gain admission tho'. As for the rain it is part of the character of the Lake District and to see a rain squall coming at you up Derwentwater is an awesome and beuatiful sight. Castlerigg site also in Keswick, but slightly further outside the town than the C&CC sites, is also very acceptable but equally as exposed. You know in the Lakes the locals have a very apt saying - "if you can see the fells it's is going to rain; if you can't it is raining!" Go for it it's nabbut watter.

Hi Alyson,

If you are members of the CC or CC&C club, there are sites at West Runton and Sandringham. All of which are superb sites. I am not too familiar with municiple sites in the area as we never use them. I can recommend a few CL's or CS's in you are interested. I can also highly recommend the CC site at Swaffham- The covert. This is one of our favourite sites, but has no facilities. All others I have mentioned have. Hope this is of some use.

Not members of either. We are new caravanners on a budget, and have held back from joining either until we decide that we want to use their facilities. If they offered me a considerable saving on campsites I would join. Im sure the sites are very good. I looked round one at Plymouth sound last week(cc). Great but no toilet and shower block! I know its cheaper to stay on a cc site if you are member, but if you tot their fees up, private sites are just as cheap if not cheaper. I know some of them could be poor, but weve been lucky so far. I wish there was a book called caravanning on a budget. It would be just the job for me!

Does The Covert have showers? We have an older van with a loo but no shower! I have a cc site collection book which they give you to tempt you to join (not the full thing), and no toilets are mentioned. In fact the cc book doesnt have a special symbol for showers, at least not in my copy. It has a symbol with a man and woman on that means heated toilet block ... but if their toilet block is unheated how do you know they have one????

We always like West Runton but do get cloud from the sea sometimes. Good walks, can leave the car on site, and you will find Norfolk is not all flat, well not quite anyway.

Nearby station for train trips to Norwich and Wroxham.

Broadlands good but a bit further.

Ferry Meadows might be worth a visit but not in Norfolk

Hi Alyson,

Unfortunately there are no toilets or showers at The Covert, which is a shame for you as it's a beautiful site, great for dogs especially. I will look up a few municiple sites in the area for you. One or two spring to mind, but as I say having never used them I can't say what they're like.

Alyson,

Have a look on ukcampsite or gocaravanning websites. Both give good selections. Try Kelling Heath, stayed there a few years ago. Lots to do if you've got children.

Thank you all for your help. We had a lot of problems getting booked in, but Castlerigg in the lakes got back to us with their last pitch for the week we wanted, so we booked it up. I will note the other sites down for our future forays. Thanks again!

Alyson, Your original post said you were concerned about damp in the lakes in October but you have opted for it anyway. Like anywhere in Britain you take your chances with the weather at any time. I hope the sun shines on you and you have a great time.

Yes I am concerned about damp, but it was getting to the point where I couldnt find anywhere that was reasonably priced and had lots to do. So I will take lots of warm clothing, waterproofs and my camping fan heater and hope for the best!

Unfortunately, the run from S Yorks to Norfolk isn't too good, although once there it is a lovely part of the country. I would highly recommend joining the CC as you have the choice of CL (5 van sites) sites which are cheaper. Also, have a look at their website - it might be cheaper if you join on-line.
