So where are you all off to this summer?

We've just booked a ferry from Plmpouth - Roscoff, an extortionate £575 return in July/August - wife's a teacher, so have to go then, we're in the process of booking a site in the Loire area direct. Prices seem keen at about 30 Euros per night inc EHU, awning etc for the two of us.

Can't wait!

How much have you got to pay?

Don't worry about the flying, I always work on the basis if it was risky why would the pilots do it every day for a job ??

ps If something did go wrong it would only hurt for about half a second.

enjoy JB and visit Singapore, Bintan if you have time

Hi Mike,

Like you we are stuck with School Holidays. This year it's Ghent and Koblenz and a bit of Pas de Calais on the way home. Feels a bit odd because it's the first time we have ever had a main holiday where we have been to all the places before - but friends wanted to see what we had been raving about.

Hope you have a good time,

Cheers,

Mike A

P.S. If you are stuck with school holidays you can't take advantage of the offers that ferry companies have at other times. One of the things we discovered some years ago is that for peak periods, booking via one of the good agencies - Select Sites and Caravan Club are the ones we have used - can be beneficial for ferry prices. You usually have to do a minimum of 5 nights in camp sites from their brochure but otherwise you can break out and stay where you want. They obviously get better rates from the ferry companies than can individuals and pass some of the savings on.

Thanks for the tip. Yep we did get a quote from the CC, which would have been marginally cheaper if we had booked 7 nights with them, but we did this once before when we first went to France 20 years ago and ended up in Little England - at a very nice French site - but absolutely full of Brits, complete with a takeaway which served chips with everything! As I only get 2 weeks in the summer, we both like to get away from our fellow countrymen as there's nothing worse than Brits abroad

Hi Mike,

I would say that keen inland prices in France would be more like 10

euros per night. They don't have the caravan club over here but if you look in their european sites guide you will find some good suggestions at French prices. 30 euros is more for the coastal sites with discos to keep you awake all night.

Yes, you are right, that can be a problem on the sites that get into the mainstream UK brochures. Next year I suggest you have a word with Andrew Erskine at Select Sites of Abergavenny, they have a lot of experience, particularly with the French market, and travel very widely looking at sites. Sometimes they come across very good sites that they just fail to make a commercial relationship with so they don't get into the brochures. A couple of times, when we wanted to go to an area they didn't have in the brochure Andrew was kind enough to pass on a couple of good tips.

As a fellow school teacher, I can sympathise, however, we have a dog who is too old to travel to France, so we stay in GB One week just outside Norwich on a CL in August, moving on to a CL at Leek in Staffordshire for a week.

Various weekends as and when we can grab them, and a weekend at a small CL nr Ripon August Bank Holiday. October half term is a bit of a nightmare, not booked anything yet, need to hurry up!

hi probably gonna start an argument but never mind id like to say to all the people who are teachers that your not alone having to pay silly prices because you have to holiday in august most parents do too

in our kids school they dont give permision for kids to go in term time its frowned upon and maybe for good reason i dont know

so weve never had the option of going in term time.every year we have to fight for our hol because my husbands boss is a tight sod and hates people having hols because he has to get cover for them and all the employees have to go in summer hols because they have kids too. we always go peak season but just take it as we havent a choice its what fits with the school thats life

so teacher arnt the only ones who have to pay the price parents do too

sorry if i offended anyone its not meant nasty just stating my opinion
