Taking Dog To Northern Ireland

We were considering going to Ireland next year and including NI in the trip. I had not realised that the regulations for taking a dog to NI are the same as travelling to any EU country. Gone are the days of arriving at the west Wales ports and rocking up onto the ferry. and touring the island of Ireland. Having looked at the costs of rabies jabs, Health Certificate and return medications etc, combined with expensive accommodation and ferry prices, France might be the better option.

When we went to ROI a few years ago, they never even bothered to check passports or dogs. It was almost as if we were travelling to IOW. No idea about now after brexit, but same rules will probably apply today?

The rules have changed both for NI and RoI for what was a free travel area for people and dogs.

As a British citizen you don’t need a passport to enter the RoI, but some form of official photo ID is required. The carrier, ferry or airline will require it. In years past there was totally free travel between UK and RoI for people and dogs. But whilst the rules for people are quite relaxed (RoI) and cost nothing as we all have some form of photo ID, but because we are classed as a third country dogs going to NI or ROI have to abide by the same rules as if going to continental Europe. Despite UK and RoI being rabies free.

Perhaps there may be some amendment to the rules as discussions take place on trying to get rid of some of the hard points. One other one being school exchanges have reached a low as most European pupils don’t have a passport, and we don’t accept photo ID.
